  • Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. In 1964, a boy chasing pigeons on the roof fell over the edge and impaled himself on the iron fence below.

Good location for walking exploration of Savannah squares and Forsyth Park. Accommodations were clean and comfortable. Laundry facility was not available. Kitchen could be better stocked with measuring spoons and cups. Coffee maker made coffee but warming plate didn’t work. Parking spot was nice feature and worked well for our Corolla.

Cozy place for a couple. Having a parking spot on property was great. Our vehicle was suburb Ascent midsize and had no problem. The apartment was conveniently located for walking and DOT bus.

Everything went well with my check-in. The carriage house was as described. I had a little difficulty because the mattress sits so high off the floor but I made it work.Great location Wonderful neighborhood. Lots of folks out walking their doggies.

5/5 Great Stay Near Forsyth ParkWe really enjoyed our stay at this carriage house. The location is excellent — just a short walk to Forsyth Park and close to everything we wanted to do. Parking is a bit tight, but that’s expected in Savannah’s older historic areas, and it was still very convenient to have a reserved spot.The place was comfortable and the host communicated well. We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

My husband and I were in Savannah for two nights and really enjoyed staying in the carriage house. We didn't really cook, but the kitchen had the basic equipment you'd need to prepare meals. The furniture is super comfy! The bed is on the firm side (which I like) and the stairs are steep-just things to be aware of. Mary is super responsive and helpful. Note-parking is tight, but my husband was able to back our Ford F350 crew cab into the spot. The free trolley stops right around the corner which was so convenient. We would definitely stay again!

BUG BITES FROM THE COUCH

First, the place is absolutely filthy. The floor is absolutely covered in dirt. (Response from them: “that’s not true our housekeepers are great”). The shower’s pipes are incorrectly installed and the hot side is cold. I messaged and got an initial response, but when I asked why it wasn’t in the listing I got no response (Response from them: “it didn’t seem important enough to respond to”). There was a hole in the ceiling just covered up with tape (Response from them: “we know”). Lovely to hear but why didn’t I? My friend slept on the pull out couch, which was a part of the original listing but removed without communication, and woke up covered in bug bites. They refused a refund and said we shouldn’t have been on the pullout anyway since “it wasn’t in the listing”. Whether you use the pullout or not, there are bugs in the couch. Mary and Jess are just awful and I would never recommend staying at any of their properties.

Need complete handrail on stairway

This Vrbo is very charming. Great location. I think you should have a complete handrail on your stairway though. I am in my 60s and it felt precarious to go up and down. We had trouble controlling the temperature in the vrbo - either too hot or cold.

Historic area

Property very clean and comfortable. Within walking distance to parks and historical sites. The stairs going up to the second floor to the bedroom are quite steep which was the only drawback to this property. Would stay here again.

Great location for walking

Easy walk to sites and restaurants from this location. Great that it comes with its own parking spot, is a little tight but doable with a med size vehicle. Unit smells a little musty, linens are low- medium quality. Bed was comfy, pillows are flat foam. Stairs are steep, we are sixty something’s with minor knee and back issues, as long as you’re careful it’ll be fine. Didn’t hang out at the unit much and didn’t do any cooking but kitchen seemed well stocked with dishes and cooking utensils. Good size fridge. Coffee maker with filters and coffee provided. Overall good experience.

Location and Parking only Pluses

Per my title, this property is in a perfect location for enjoying Savannah. We walked nearly everywhere through many of the charming squares. There is off-street parking provided which is the other big advantage. Other than that this unit really needs some TLC. The unit is very dark despite what the photos show, and very tiny. The stove and microwave are ancient. The microwave is stained and rusty and weak. The stove is so old all the markings are scrubbed off so you don’t know which knob is which burner or where high or low is. One burner is completely unplugged and the others are so rickety that the pans won’t sit straight. The sponge left by the sink was shredded and disgustingly dirty. There was one wine glass. One roll of TP for 4 days. Up in the bedroom, a nice big closet, but no luggage racks or hangars. The bathroom has approximately 3”x3” corners to set your toiletries. The wall cabinet has no shelves so is useless. Even the toilet top is not level, so if you try to put things there, they slide off onto the floor. In the bedroom one side table with light is so rickety I hesitated to put a cup of coffee on it. Yes there are a washer and dryer but you have to navigate a minefield of broken junk getting to the utility room under the main house. We went and bought toilet paper, wine glasses and some hangars. Savannah “Luxury” Rentals never returned emails or calls. We made it work but it could be a small but nice rental with some attention.
