We paid via Vrbo around 300EUR/night + 38EUR city tax and stayed six nights.
No doubt, that apartment doesn't worth that price.
PROS:
- Good view of the lake
- We arrived at a dirty apartment. The company apologized and offered us another apartment for one night. We rejected it because it was late and we were tired. Finally, they more or less cleaned the apartment the next day and returned us 150EUR of the cleaning fee.
CONS:
- The railway is 25 meters from the apartment. It makes a lot of noise. Prepare to wake up at 5 am with the first train!
- A company, not a person, provides the rental. So don't expect a personal attitude.
- Lack of attention to a lot of small things. For example, we had a dozen small bottles of shampoo that we didn't use, but we didn't have enough toilet paper. We bought it on our own! No kitchen towels, the water tap in the kitchen was leaking, burned out glass candles, etc.
- Old belongings of the apartment's owners are still there in many places. It doesn't make the apartment cozy but littery.
- The parking is announced, but the gate and parking place is exceptionally tight. Don't even try to park if you have a medium-sized car. We spent half an hour getting out through the gate uphill and not scratching our vehicle. There is public parking uphill, but it's not convenient if you have heavy luggage.
- Varenna city center is located half an hour by foot. You have to walk on a road in some places because there is no pedestrian way there. It's not a problem itself, but be prepared to walk daily for dinner in a restaurant. The restaurant located close to the apartment was permanently closed or fully booked.
- The dirty apartment ruined the first impression.
- The apartment is relatively small. We expected something more comfortable for this price.
- Beds are old and creak when you turn over. Opening and closing a creaky toiled door handle at night would also wake you up. Again, it's not what you expect for 300EUR/night.
I hope you understand why I got just one star for this place :(
