I should have pushed for the full refund. Immediately after booking, and taking 2/3 of the rental fee, the owner sent a message saying they could not guarantee our stay. They offered to reschedule or cancel without penalty. Going through VRBO I was only looking at a 20% refund instead of 100%, so I messaged the owner. They claimed it was a miscommunication, and they would guarantee us a pleasant stay. We arrived to a house that was 52F with the thermostat held @61. We tried to adjust but no heat was coming. We called the owner who managed to get the kind neighbor to bring some firewood and the owner delivered only 3 space heaters when they could not get the heat to work. In our 15 hour stay, the lack of heat was extremely uncomfortable. The space heaters stopped working at 3am because they were over worked. We woke up at 7am to a house that was chilling. The thermostat read 70, when heater in the bedroom across the hall was turned on, but the whole house was never above 62. It was 50F outside. The owner offered us a complimentary extension until 5pm the following day, but it was so uncomfortable, we just left by 7:30am. None of us slept well at all. I regret not pushing for the original offer of a zero penalty cancelation. The house was clean, and adorable with a lovely fireplace; probably good for summer only. We did everything right, and yet did not enjoy the stay. Because of the broken heating, they should have refunded us. Proper maintenance is essential to renting.
