While the hotel is in a beautiful, historic location, with a great outdoor pool, I am rating it on the basis of it (and its price point) being 5 stars.
The pros:
- location
- outdoor pool
- rooms were clean and comfortable
- pool staff were great (as were breakfast servers)
- breakfast was decent - apart from when the couple next to us proceeded to take 10 hard boiled eggs and eat them with all the grace of the Cookie Monster (not the hotels fault I know. Was just something I wanted to share). Good job I didn't want a hard boiled egg that morning
The cons:
- never got a call to say our room was ready (picky and we understand they are busy, but still, it's easy)
- rooms were really, really weirdly designed:
---the doors to the patio opened from the middle, and the wrong way, like they had been put on back to front (not a big deal, we just looked in a mirror to open them)
---limited space in the bathroom - seriously, I kept accidentally phoning the front desk with the bathroom phone every time I wanted a wipe (i.e. zero space)
---no extraction fan
---no iron (do I care if I am a little wrinkled? No. Does my wife...! Seems a basic necessity.
Again - this is all on the basis of it being 5-star, it's not fussiness or unreasonable expectations on our part. I've stayed in 1 star to 5 star places and unfortunately this is closer to 3.5. Finally - the bars were non-existent. The reception bar closed at 7pm and resembled a co-working space, or funeral waiting room. Upstairs, empty!
