The pictures are accurate but likely taken a couple years ago. Everything is just the same but worn and dated. It was tidy but not clean if that makes sense. The unit needs a deep deep clean like all the nooks and crannies.
Upon walking in, it was HOT. We turned on the one ac unit in the front room and it started to cool pretty quickly; although, it smelled musty and the button is broken. The bedroom is in the back and was super warm. The ceiling fan only goes one speed - slow. There was no bulb in the side table lamp so pretty dark as well. The bedspread smelled laundered but it was stained (chocolate? blood? something red/brown) in multiple places.
Everything up to this point was tolerable and we would have settled for the less than a perfect stay... until we realized the biggest issue - ants everywhere. When I say everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE. They were crawling all along the walls, along the floor boards, all over the kitchen, in the front room, crawling on us while we were sitting on the couch, and in the bed. That's where I drew the line. I can tolerate ants in the kitchen or bathroom, but I work too damn hard, spent too much money, and traveled too far to allow myself to sleep with bugs crawling on me during my dream vacation in Maui.
I contacted the property manager who said they've never had an issue with bugs in the unit (Mind you, there was a nearly empty can of Raid under the sink.). There's no way that's true. The unit is INFESTED with an ant colony that lives in the walls. It's to the point where they acted like roaches, which I have never seen ants do - I turned on the kitchen light and a bunch ran under the toaster. Then when I picked up the toaster there were dozens scrambling for cover. They're crawling in and out of the crevices between the counter shared by the kitchen and front room, all up and down the cabinets, all down the baseboards. Just everywhere. The property manager asked for pictures so I emailed a few. She said someone would come by to put down some ant traps the next day and that it would take a couple days to clear up the ants.
Not sure if it worked. We left. I couldn't do it. I took the $1800 loss and spent twice as much getting a nice hotel room for the rest of our trip, but it was worth it. We did what we needed to do to turn the nightmare into a dream vacation.
