A juicy novel and a phone filled with your favorite shows are some wonderful options. If you intend to take a short nap, a neck pillow and some earplugs will also be useful. Finally, find room for a toothbrush and some deodorant to ensure you arrive looking and feeling fresh.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Make sure you don't have sharp objects (like a knife or scissors) hiding in one of the zippers of your hand luggage. Other restricted items include explosive or flammable substances, such as fuel and fireworks, and gels and liquids in containers larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters).

• The best way to ensure a comfortable flight can be as simple as your clothing choices. Prepare yourself for varying temperatures by layering up. • Time to strip down. Well kind of. Your belt, coat, keys and other contents of your pockets, like coins, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make your life easier by removing them as your turn draws near.
• Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go on a tray for inspection. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Can't travel without your favorite perfume or cologne? Not a problem. As long as the volume is no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it's stored in a zip-lock bag, you can bring it with you in your carry-on.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several minutes. Boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes usually aren't.
• Pocket knives and other sharp items are not allowed on board. They'll be seized at security, so pack them in your checked bags.
