No matter where you're coming from, flying can be a pleasant experience if you prepare well enough. We've compiled a list of essential travel tips that will get your Omi vacation started on the right foot.What to pack in your hand luggage:

• Traveling on a plane can be a great experience if you've got all the right gear. Firstly, you'll need basic toiletries, such as deodorant and a toothbrush, a spare set of clothes and a few magazines. Secondly, find room in your carry-on bag for your electronic devices, chargers, any vital medications and perhaps a quality neck pillow too. Lastly, remember to bring your passport, travel docs and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked luggage. Any gels or liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Sharp objects, like your trusty pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and fuels, are also prohibited.

What to wear on a flight:

• The narrow aisles of a plane are no place for a fashion parade. Layer yourself up with comfortable clothes and don't forget to bring a cardigan as it can get chilly inside the cabin on long-haul flights. Flat, enclosed shoes are also a sensible choice.
• You've probably heard about deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clot condition caused by long periods of sitting. There's plenty you can do to reduce your risk. Wear a quality pair of compression tights or socks, stay well hydrated and keep your legs and feet moving. Do a lap or two of the cabin or perform exercises in your seat.

The trick is to be well prepared before you get to the airport security gate. That way, you'll be hopping onto that plane to Omi before you know it. Follow these tips and get your vacation off to a fantastic start:

• Security personnel first need to see that you have a valid ID and travel documents before you can proceed any further. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• Your belt, jacket, keys and other contents of your pockets, like your headphones, will need to go on a tray through the X-ray machine. Make the whole process faster by removing them as your turn draws near.
• Electronic devices like laptops and phones will also need to go on a tray to be scanned. Don't worry though, you'll be back online soon enough.
• Remove liquids and gels from your hand luggage. They often need to be sent through the X-ray scanner separately. Each item should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit inside a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• It's also possible you'll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a good idea.
• Airlines won't allow any sharp objects to come on board with you. If you must bring these kinds of items, pack them safely in your checked baggage.
