• First things first, pack your passport, travel documents, bank cards and daily medications. Next, you'll need some in-flight entertainment to while away the hours. A juicy novel and a laptop filled with your favorite shows are some fantastic options. If you hope to take a quick snooze, a neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also come in handy. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some facial wipes to ensure you step off the plane feeling fresh and raring to go.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between air carriers, the general rule to follow is avoid carrying anything flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes things like box cutters, razor blades, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like ice skates, and items that could harm passengers, such as guns and swords, aren't allowed in the cabin either.

What to wear on a flight:
