• Traveling on a plane can be easy if you've got all the right stuff. Firstly, you'll want a few basic toiletry items, such as a toothbrush and some deodorant, a spare pair of socks and a good book. Next, make room in your bag for your electronic gadgets, chargers, your medications and maybe a neck pillow too. Lastly, and most importantly, don't forget to bring your passport, travel papers and some cash.

Do not pack the following items in your hand luggage:

• While the list of banned items can differ between airlines, the general guide to follow is nothing flammable, sharp or explosive. This includes screwdrivers, blades, fuels and bleaching agents. Sports equipment like baseball bats, and items that could harm passengers, such as pepper spray and firearms, are also banned from the cabin.

What to wear on a flight:

• The long, narrow aisles of your airplane are no fashion runway. Layer yourself up with comfortable clothes and remember to bring a sweater as it can get quite cool in the cabin during long-haul flights. Flat, slightly roomy shoes are also a sensible choice.
• It's likely you've heard about DVT (deep vein thrombosis), a blood clotting condition caused by long periods of inactivity. There's plenty you can do to lessen your risk. Don a pair of compression socks, drink lots of water and keep your legs and feet moving. Do a few laps of the cabin or perform some stretches in your seat.

• Security personnel first need to see that you have a valid ID and matching travel documents before anything else. Have them close by, ready for inspection.
• The X-ray machine is up next. Empty your pockets and remove anything that is likely to set off the alarm. This includes things like headphones or earphones, as well as bulky coats or jackets. They'll need to be placed on the conveyor belt for screening.
• Your electronic devices like laptops and phones will also have to go on a tray for inspection. No need to worry though, you'll be back online in no time.
• Don't forget to remove liquids and gels from your carry-on bag. They often need to be sent through the X-ray machine separately. Each product should be in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and everything must fit in a quart-size (one liter), clear zip-lock bag.
• Choosing your footwear wisely can save you several precious minutes. Hiking boots are often required to be removed and X-rayed separately. Slip-on shoes are usually not.
• Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, put them in your checked baggage. They won't be allowed in the cabin.
