Peaceful Mexican Village Getaway
Shelley's place was everything we hoped for. It was off the beaten path, away from tourist traffic and activities, but close enough to access the beaches and unique villages in the area. We were on the go a lot, but we could have easily spent much of the week comfortably relaxing there, enjoying the quiet front and back patios and the park and cenote across the street. This is a Mexican casita that feels authentic to the area, and there are a lot of nice touches. We loved the local artwork and vibrant colors. The kitchen is newly remodeled and well-stocked, and it's easy to prepare simple meals. It was very clean, and the king bed was comfy! We made use of the two provided beach chairs and beach towels for our trips to local beaches. There's plenty of privacy on the back patio, and we loved the option to take advantage of the outdoor shower after beach trips. Shelley's communication was great, and she offered a ton of information to help us feel at home and learn about the area. When there was an unexpected problem with the A/C, she was on it right away and worked with her on-site manager to quickly fix it. We felt very safe in the quiet little neighborhood and enjoyed exploring the village of Chemuyil. It's a bit of a drive to Tulum, so look carefully at the map if you want to be close to Tulum activities. If you want a peaceful and authentic experience away from the tourists, you will likely fall in love with this special little casita!

Disappointed…
Unlike previous guests we were very disappointed with this rental. It looks pretty from the outside, but the roar of nearby highway traffic day and night was disturbing and depressing (for us). You can’t get to any beach without navigating the busy highway. The living and dining area are very colourful and comfortable and so is the bed. The kitchen is in bad shape. The sink is old and crusty. No real cupboards or drawers. Plastic shelves with mostly plastic plates and glasses hidden behind Velcro curtains. The back patio is neglected and sad.

This is rich coming from people who treated the casita like their personal pigsty. Rotting fruit on the table, maggots in the trash, which appeared to never be taken out by the way, and filthy dishes everywhere. Plus you were extremely rude to my kind neighbors. Unless you’re going to stay at a resort at quadruple the price, you’re going to have to drive to a beach, including 2 minutes to the one across the road. You should have done more research about the area. My review of your stay reflects your complete lack of respect. Good riddance. Circling back about the kitchen. There are no plastic shelves or plastic dishes or glasses. I have metal rolling carts for all kitchen items, making them more accessible than shelves under the counter. Green pans for cookware. Corelle for the dishes and acrylic drinkware. Why? Because I learned early on that people break dishes and glassware constantly. For safety, I moved to high quality unbreakable dishware. Utensils are metal. And there is extremely hard water in the area, I replace the kitchen and bathroom faucet hardware regularly because of the build up. The backyard looks exactly like the photos, and I can't control traffic sounds.

Great location, bad water pressure
We enjoyed our stay in Chemuyil. It's a delightful town and a nice neighborhood. The casa is comfortable except that the water pressure is very low, so that taking a shower is difficult.

Kitty, did you ever talk to the property manager about this? I’m sure it could have been resolved it quickly if you told them. I’m sorry this happened.

Real Mexico!
If you want to get a nice, relaxing vacation, this is the place to stay! Sweet little casa right off the highway. Easy access to beach and the local cenotes are pretty much in your front yard. Plenty of towels and supplies in the house for use as well. The Ciudad Chemuyil is the real deal. Children singing for pesos with Our Lady of Guadalupe day coming soon. Restaurants in the tiny town had amazing seafood and service. Would definitely stay at this colorful and cute property again!!

Chan Chemuyl
We enjoyed our stay in Chan Chemuyl. The neighborhood is clean and nice. Very charming. We absolutely loved the small cenotes right there within the community. The house is also cute and comfortable. Shelley was accessible via email wherever we had a question and was very helpful. As long as you have a car, this is a great option for anyone who prefers to stay outside of the main tourist area of Tulum and still have easy access to town and the beaches. Tulum beach was about a 20-30 drive (depending on traffic) and town was more like 15 minutes. The Turtle Sanctuary across the street is beautiful but I would still recommend driving as you must cross the busy highway and it is a little nerve-racking on foot ;) Akumal and it's beaches are also only a 10 minute drive from the casa. Overall we had a great time and would certainly recommend staying here. Thanks Shelley!!

Cute neighbour hood and house
Travelling with my partner and our two young children. The good: The house & neighbour hood is charming. Patrictio who came to introduce himself was super kind and welcoming and let us know if we needed anything to not hesitate to contact. There were tons of clean towels to use. Air conditioning in like 3 rooms for such a small place meant if it’s hot, you sure won’t be inside! The master bed was literally one of the comfiest I’ve been in in a long time. The medium: First, the pin on the VRBO map shows the property on the other side of the highway, the beach side. This is very misleading. It is in fact on the other side meaning you need to run across the busy highway to start your walk to the beach. With two kids under 4, this wasn’t ideal. It’s also much longer than a 10 min walk which would be fine except when it’s so hot and humid with kids. The beach hours are super limited (10-4:30). There is a plunger that lives over the drain in the shower which I think is used to keep cockroaches out? I could be wrong but once I moved it off the drain and left it off for a bit we had a visitor so I promptly put it back on. Ants were a little bit of an issue but also we weren’t bothered, bugs are a part of travel a lot of the time. The backyard was cuter in photos. The hammock was very broken we couldn’t lay in it which was probably one of the bigger bummers. All in all, it’s a fine stay at a good price and it is a cute house. We wouldn’t stay again but that’s mostly just due to the location and challenges of travelling with kids. We didn’t reach out for help during the stay as nothing was a big deal to us, but I almost considered mentioning the hammock because having that space to lay would have been lovely. If you stay here, you absolutely need a rental car. There’s also a free cenote in Chemuyil if you ask any locals they can point you to it which is cool. Area felt safe.

Hi Karly, I wish you would have told me about the hammock, I had no idea! I will have the property managers get a new one ASAP. The pin on the map is done by VRBO, I don’t have the ability to move it. I also can’t help that the beach hours at Xcacel are limited to 6 hours a day. It’s run by a Mayan family to preserve the integrity and cleanliness of what is first and foremost turtle nesting grounds. I wish you had reached out, this is the first 3 star review I’ve ever received in the 10 years I’ve been renting out the house.

a joyous stay
Shelley's Joyas is a comfortable Mexican art treasure in the small safe neighborhood of Chan Chemuyila with a beautiful cenote that the locals use. Her kitchen and bath are all-equipped; the beds are comfortable with soft sheets. Beach chairs for the playa. Best pescada entera is at Jungle Fish. Bera Beta in Puerto Avanturas and Anita's in Akumal are local gems. Covid testing in Akumal is 45$ at the med clinic. but be sure you have it opened and ready before you go to the airport. Xpuha is a great beach, for $5-- go to the left to get away from the crowd. incredible. Xcacel is also a great beach. Franciso Uh May for great architecture, Vallodolid for bees, and a women's prison where you can help women learn a living by buying a beautiful hammock; El Tigrille "stand" has the best cochinita pibil. Thanks for a piece of heaven and answering sooo many questions! You can map ATMs for pesos or dollars. Sharon

Truly a beautiful home in a quiet community on the Mayan Riviera. If you want to do tourism off the beaten path, without getting involved in all of the raucousness Cancun/Playa del Carmen/Tulum have to offer, then this staying at Shelley's is an excellent option. Perfect for families, but not only-- we are a young couple and we absolutely loved it.

We’ve stayed in Chan Chemuyil at least 6 times in the past 12 years. It’s always great to come back. I appreciated Shelley’s attention to decorating her house with traditional Mexican artwork, and having the cenote and trees directly in front of the house. It’s nice to wake up in the morning and watch nature from the patio while drinking my coffee.

Sweet family getaway
Casita de Joyas was a perfect spot to explore the Riviera Maya with my kids for the week. I wanted to find something different from the resort scene, and this house was in a great location. We were close enough to the things we wanted to see and do without being inundated with tourists when we got home at the end of the day. The casita is clean, adorably decorated, and has everything you need for comfort. The owner had great communication and was extremely helpful in giving us local knowledge tips for the area. Highly recommended!

Great location
If you want to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the hotel row areas and resort living, chan chemuyil is a friendly neighborhood near an authentic Mayan pueblo close enough to walk. Local cenotes were a real plus being free and walking distance . We did feel that we came at the wrong time due to the excessive seaweed along the beaches. I would recommend checking on this before booking if you are coming for the beach life. Shelley was a wonderful host. We recommend this casa!

Our Beautiful Quaint Casa!
Great location just north of Tulum and south of Akumal. All the comforts of home were there and the local artwork uniquely decorates the casa. We enjoyed 11 glorious days in Chan Chamuyil - a lovely friendly small community within walking distance to the Xcacal beach. A grand white sand beach with specific 10-4pm hours. We felt safe and cozy in the neighborhood, greeting the joyful neighbors and visiting three local cenotes. Shelley was extremely helpful and responsive which provided us with a sense of security and reassurance especially during these times. She went well beyond to support our journey with information pertaining to the COVID rules etc and travel. In the mornings. we enjoyed walking along the Akumal beach trail and watching the sunrise. We accessed the beach (a 5min drive) from the Bahia Principle entrance off the main Highway. Our favorite day was exploring the Mayan Ruins of Coba (rented bikes there) and then swimming in two local Coba cenotes (Choo-Ha and Multum-Ha). There is so much to enjoy and relax into here in this area - away from the crowds. Unfortunately, we lost our casa keys one day, we reached out to her on-site person Patricio who quickly rescued us provided another set and met us at our door timely. I strongly suggest leaving them in the lock box.

If you’re looking for an off the beaten path place away from the resorts and an authentic Mexican experience this is your place! The house had everything we needed. Shelley the owner was very gracious and personally contacted us to ensure all our questions were answered! Her local care takers respected our privacy until we had an issue with our water pressure (No Water) then Patricio was on it immediately! Had it fixed very quickly... Hot water is an issue for showering very speratic but a cool shower feels welcome almost every day any time! Mucho Caliente out side! We would Return  Dave & Sue

Wonderful stay @ a delightful home
Sitting here at work wishing I were back! I was determined to relax during our stay: sit by the fountain in the backyard, read on the patio, sleep-in on the comfy king bed... but I kept being drawn to the nearby adventures. Snorkeling in Yal Ku Lagoon was straight out of a Disney movie. We met a "Guardian" of the local cenote (right across the street from the house!) who gave us an underwater tour. Drank coco locos straight from a coconut at Chamicos before wading out hundreds of feet into the warm waters. Enjoyed eating fresh delicacies, and meeting locals who were welcoming and kind. The casa was equipped with everything you could need and much more. Artisanal touches throughout. Shelley was a dream to work with and offered advice and recommendations that ultimately made us feel like we truly belonged there. Can't wait to return!

Great little "CASITA"!
Stayed for 5 weeks beginning Feb. 1, 2019. Great little house with everything you need. Rented bikes for the entire stay and got around just fine between the bikes and the Colectivo. Would rate a 5 star except for the chairs. Not a comfortable place to sit, that being said the location is the absolute best. Spent a fair amount of time next door in Chemuyil and by the time we left felt like we knew half the townspeople. I have to mention the kingsize bed that is so comfortable!! Sheets, towels, beach umbrella, absolutely everything top notch. Small park across the street, lots of bird watching in the AM drinking coffee out front. Can't say enough good about this little slice of Heaven on Earth!

Peaceful
We enjoyed the peaceful environment. The neighborhood is small, safe, and extremely quiet. There were a few people walking their dogs but that was rare. The cottage is located outside of the tourist zone and a quick drive to most attractions. The jungle surrounds the neighborhood. At night it is quiet. Sometimes you can hear a truck drive by on the nearby coastal highway. The beds were comfy and the AC works well. Spotless and bug free home. Water was abundant. Love the decor and large selection of movies to watch. Cenotes are located across the street for a quick dip. We were very comfortable within our 1 week stay.

Loved it! It was my second time and I will go again. It’s a great way to experience a gorgeous area.
This is a cute little house with all the basics— plus a lot of charm on the side— in a friendly neighborhood with a beach you can walk to. You can sit out in the private backyard courtyard for meals, say hello to the occasional passerby in the front patio, and feel less constrained than you would in a resort. You can walk to town or to the beach, and watch DVD’s at night from the owner’s nice collection, or borrow a book for the beach. The house is colorfully decorated and has a wonderful, warm feel. I made smoothies every morning in the compact but cute kitchen, which you couldn’t do in a hotel. Staying there makes you feel you know the owner, and would be friends with her. She was amazingly responsive when a circuit breaker tripped and we didn’t fix the right one. Her neighbors love her, which says a lot. The caretaker, Patricio, has kind eyes and a gentle manner and remembered me even though it had been two years since he saw me, and it was the same with a neighbor. I would not stay anywhere else when near Tulum. It’s a good location— we took the ferry to Cozumel one day and had a simply glorious day we will remember forever, went to a night amusement park in Playa del Carmen and didn’t mind the drive back late at night, spent a few days trying different beach clubs, restaurants with completely different vibes, and biking around Tulum, and felt like happy beach bums at Turtle Bay in Akumal, which has the best breakfast around. I want to live here!

Wonderful stay for our family
Great location near fantastic Xcacel beach, where we swam and snorkeled and took dips in the Cenote there and get nibbled by tiny fish. Also, across the street from the casa were 2 small cenotes where you could go and relax at the middle or end of day. Always felt completely safe as we walked day or night to nearby Chemuyil for a variety of foods or pick up something from the small grocery. Casa was well appointed and had all our basic needs. Was fun to go to busier ruins, Tulum, Xel-ha park, etc, and come back to laid back Chan Chemuyil and sit on the porch or patio and listen to crickets, frogs, and star gaze. Wi-Fi was a bonus and AC was great for when we arrived back hot from an outing and needed to cool off quickly. Cheerful neighbors - Carolers came singing, and Santa even visited our 10 year old on Christmas eve! Rental car was useful to access all local activities. Highly recommended!

Sweet low key casita in between Akumal and Tulum
A very nice low key casita about a 20 minute drive to Tulum beaches and a 10 minute drive to Akumal beach. Like other reviewers' comments mention, we highly recommend renting a car if choosing this property. While technically "walking distance" to beautiful Xcacel beach, it is a pretty substantial walk. Xcacel beach is not developed and has no services (restaurants, dive rentals etc) to offer - and that is one of its charms to be sure- but if you want to spend the day there (and you should!), hauling a cooler and deck chairs (provided) with food, some shade, snorkel gear etc... You'll be happier taking your car over. Bike rentals were available, but the roads are rough and didn't seem too fun to ride on. The house itself is just as the photos describe and very comfortable, with nice decorative touches and a charming patio where we enjoyed coffee and breakfast each morning. It is a small 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom that was perfect for the two of us. The AC, and fans worked great and we enjoyed preparing meals in a modest but well appointed kitchen with pots, pans and the all important coffee maker! If you want to be in the action, this may be just a tad out of the way for you. Restaurants and nightlife are a drive away, as is a supermarket and bank etc... However if you shun the mega-resort vibe and prefer something more down home, this is a good fit. The casita is part of a small housing development near the local village of Chemuyil which is refreshingly non touristy and provides an authentic Mexican feel. Depending on the wind direction, you can hear the nearby highway, but generally this area is quiet with many Americans neighbors. The owner was terrific and property managers who helped us with getting settled in were great. We enjoyed our stay and recommend to anyone who is looking for a low key yet comfortable home as a base to explore this beautiful region.
