For many years, the river was the border river of the inner-German border. Today, there are no longer many fences or watchtowers to indicate a former border, as nature has reclaimed this habitat. Today, the unique natural environment provides an important habitat for various protected animals. Many beautiful places such as Hitzacker or Bleckede invite you to visit along the Elbe riverside road. - The Wendland is a region in the eastern part of Lower Saxony and has become famous for the protests against nuclear power. In recent years, many people have once again travelled to this region to stop the Castor transports. In the meantime, Wendland with its unique round villages has become a popular meeting place for many different people. Every year in May/June, the "Kulturelle Landpartie" takes place in Wendland, where many craftsmen, drop-outs, travellers, musicians etc. exhibit or perform their work.
