  • The Rio Grande River winds 12 miles down Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park, Texas. When the water is high you can come down the 1,500 foot walled canyon. With less water flowing, guides take you 3 to 4 miles up the canyon with some spots having to portage. But take it all in stride because the views are breathtaking. I recommend Big Bend River Tours. You might get lucky and have the guides that take you a half mile up a side canyon. An excellent day excursion in the out of the way national park.

Property very much as expected. Lots of kitchen supplies & utensils plus frig has many condiments. Several gallon water jugs also provided. Only downside is distance from the park - 35 minutes to Maverick entrance gate (which was known).

Great spot for the family when visiting BBNP

First of all, the hosts for this property are terrific! Excellent communication throughout the process, clear and concise directions and entry into the unit via PDF document, and very responsive on questions and feedback. Finding lodging for a family of 5 adults in the BBNP area is challenging as there are many smaller unit or straight out camping options, but difficult to find a unit to accommodate everyone. This unit fit the bill perfectly, and has an adjoining casita where two of our adult sons slept. The unit was very clean, plenty of functional kitchenware (which you don't often find in these rentals). Everything worked great! No issues with wifi, TV, appliances, bathroom and kitchen plumbing fixtures or HVAC units. Overall, the family was very happy with our stay there. To be fully transparent, there are a few things to be aware of. The house is approximately a 45 min drive to the park so plan accordingly. The last mile of road and driveway into the house is not paved. The driveway into the house can be a bit rough, we were in two 4WD SUVs so no issues for us but if you are in a sedan you will need to exercise caution driving in and out. Lastly, the house would benefit from a refresh and update. Aside from that, 5 Stars all around for the house and hosts!

Would definitely stay again!

Great house! Everything you need. The only critic would be the AC in the detached casita was barely blowing and wasn’t cold. My husband opened it out and it was brown with dirt and lots of dead moths fell out. After he cleaned the filter, it worked perfectly.

Terlingua Ranch

Our rental property was great! We had plenty of room and we spent more time outside on the porch in the evenings stargazing and watching lightening in the distance. Beds were comfortable and everything was clean. We are planning on making yearly trips to Big Bend and will stay again if the property is available

Remote desert getaway

We had a lovely few days at Desert Aura. It was perfect spot for 6 adults. We had stocked up on food in Alpine and loved eating dinner out on the patio and then enjoying the stars. We also picked up BBQ at DBs in Terlingua one night on our way back from the park. It’s a 45 minute drive to Terlingua so it’s good to plan accordingly. Great spot with beautiful views over the desert.

Excellent stay!

My brother, sister-in-law & I stayed at Desert Aura to attend their daughter's wedding at Big Bend State Park in April, 2024. The accommodations were perfect for us, & the guest house came in handy for the newlyweds. We loved the various patios, loved star-gazing at night, & enjoyed our time in the house. We all agree we would stay here again if we ever have a reason to come back. Communicating with Daryl & Janet was also very convenient, & their response time was very prompt. It was a pleasure staying here!

The property was in a remote location when the nation's greatest dark sky was observed. The property provides solitude, relaxation and comfort. The amenities are plenty...WIFI, cable tv, grill, full stock kitchen...on and on. The distances to Terlingua and Big Bend National Park are manageable and after couple of runs, the distances seem trivial.

Our Big Bend family adventure was wonderful! This property was a clean and beautiful piece of the whole week long adventure. The best quote from the trip was from the 9 year old that said that this trip was "way better than Disney".

Janet and Daryl are the best!

Our first rental had a few hiccups, but Janet and Daryl were on that immediately. They made sure we had a wonderful experience. Big Bend is beautiful, with friendly people (even at over 100-degree heat!) Thank y'all so much!!!! Definitely coming back soon.

Big Bend - Terlingua Ranch Wilderness Experience

Truly remarkable location if you want to get away and have a wilderness experience and a peek into what it was like to live in this beautifully isolated place. The location provides an incredible view of the Chisos and is in heart of the nearby Terlingua Ranch. The property is in the middle of about 60 acres on a hill at an elevation of about 3800 feet - the same of Panther Junction in Big Bend. This elevation is about 2000 feet above the desert flow and sits below the mountain peaks that surround the area providing an almost constant breeze and is cooler in temps. The North park entrance for BBNP is about 2 miles via Marathon Road but you will need 4 wheel drive to enter the park this way. The property has all the amenities and is an authentic Southwest ranch house. The host for this property is very responsive and will take care of you.
