We just spent a week at Casa Ironbark, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a rental in the area. That’s not to say we don’t have recommendations for improvements, but wow - bang for the buck, you would struggle to beat it. It’s comfortable and in a great location.
First, it IS seven minutes from the beach, Potrero or Penca… unless you are here in high season. One local told us that the 35 minute drive to Tamarindo becomes a 3 hour adventure in February, so management of expectations is key. Second, the house was very clean, and there are cleaning supplies, towels, brooms and a vacuum present to help keep it that way. The pool guy came twice - Tuesday and Friday, and a cleaning lady came by on Friday (we accepted fresh towels but declined the service).
The sunsets are amazing. It’s worth it just for those.
I am hopeful the new(ish) owners will fine-tune a few details, none of which were deal-breakers except maybe the first: the patio furniture seriously needs to be upgraded. Four plastic chairs does not create a wonderful outdoor experience; add outdoor dining and a couple of padded chaises or a daybed for lounging or enjoying some sun. A couple of nice, comfortable chairs on the east side would be good, too. Some additional comfortable seating in the living area would also make a difference. And the last is probably personal preference - allowing more afternoon sun on the pool would warm it up (at least closer to my liking); it’s refreshing as it is (during the green season), and maybe it would get too hot in the dry season? It’s something to consider, anyway.
Looking at the other possibilities in Potrero at this price point, there’s really nothing that compares for the full package - privacy, convenience, location and sunsets. I would definitely stay again, especially with some patio upgrades.
