Romantic Safari Tent with Twin Clawfoot Baths near Waitomo Glowworm Caves, New Zealand

This adults-only safari tent for two is set on a private hilltop high above the Waitomo hills. Redesigned in 2025, it’s made for slow mornings, long soaks, and evenings with nowhere else to be.



THE TENT



Inside, an indoor wood fireplace, polished floors, and soft layers of natural linen create a space that feels cozy yet refined. Glass doors open onto the deck, and the hilltop views follow you from bed to breakfast. The tent is fully insulated and double-glazed throughout, ensuring warmth and comfort in every season. The spacious ensuite bathroom features a rain shower, toilet, and stone basin, all overlooking the valley.



OUTSIDE



Twin clawfoot baths sit side by side on the deck, looking straight out over the valley. They’re at their best at sunrise, when the mist lifts, or at sunset with a glass of bubbles. Cook together in your private outdoor kitchen, complete with a wood-fired pizza oven, Weber barbecue, and gas hob. Later, toast marshmallows by the fire pit or set up the projector for a movie under the stars, with bean bags and lanterns.



OFF-GRID, NOT OFF-COMFORT



The tent is fully off-grid, with solar lighting, gas-heated water, and power packs for small devices. There’s good 4G coverage from the hilltop, though most guests find they barely check their phones.

Enjoy a freshly baked loaf, milk, butter, and farm-fresh eggs, along with tea, plunger coffee, hot chocolate, and a s’mores kit. Additional amenities include luxury bed linen, bath towels, Ashley & Co toiletries, a Botanical Skincare bath bomb and bubble bath, hot water bottles, picnic blankets, lanterns, firewood, and a movie selection.

GETTING THERE



The unsealed track leading up to the tent is steep, so a four-wheel-drive (4WD) or all-wheel-drive (AWD) vehicle is required. If you don’t have one, you’re welcome to borrow the owner’s Suzuki Jimny free of charge. Just let them know before you arrive. From the car park, it’s a short 120-meter walk uphill to the tent.

The world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Ruakuri Cave, and the Ruakuri Bush Walk are all nearby, along with waterfalls, ziplines, blackwater rafting, and cozy local cafés.
