Too many rules, poor check in
Lots of rules upon leaving, and notes everywhere telling you how to use the pans in the kitchen, the shower mat, the grill, hot tub, what not to do, and threats of not getting deposit back. They ask you to take your garbage to the local dump or text them if you are leaving it. Never received check in emails and had to wait on porch for 30 min., luckily it was a nice day. Cabin and surroundings are nice, but a little too much on the rules side during stay and at check out for the price and for being "on vacation."

Unfortunately this guest was extremely demanding, impossible to please, took quite terrible care of the property, and was generally very difficult to please despite our very best efforts. I would not recommend this guests to other Hosts.

Immaculate home
In a beautiful location! Great to sit on the deck or in the hot tub and look at the mountains. Very comfortable home — beds, couches, space. Lots of storage, nicely equipped kitchen. It was just the two of us, but the two levels would be great for two couples or a family.

Home away from home
Fantastic property with stunning views and close to all the Shenandoah area has to offer. Will definitely book in the future when we travel to this area in VA. I know many are concerned about COVID-19 and cleanliness. This place is by far the cleanest property we have stayed at before or during the pandemic.

Great getaway close to Shenadoah
This is our second time renting from this property owner and it was again a great experience. The cabin was immaculate, well-appointed and welcoming. We made use of the fire pit (despite the wintry weather) and had a lovely time.

Loved the view! Spent lots of time relaxing on the balcony. Saw a hummingbird and deer. Property managers very helpful and easy to get in touch with if needed. Very clean. Was the relaxing vacation needed in the time of social distancing!

Amazing Views and Amenities
My husband, daughter and I spent three nights here over New Years. We had a lovely time relaxing at the house, enjoying all the amenities. The views can’t be beat. The house was nicely decorated for the holidays. There’s a fabulous playground near the Food Lion that we visited a few times. We had a wonderful time!

Mountain getaway
We had a wonderful time staying at the Black Bear Lodge. It's the perfect jumping off point for a mountain getaway. The view from the home is simply wonderful. We spent our mornings and evenings just taking in the views of the valley. We managed to go on a hike in Shenandoah National Park, walk around Luray and even met Ben Jones of the Dukes of Hazzard at Cooter's in Luray. The home is clean, well stocked with kitchen utensils and cooking equipment. The beds and bathrooms were comfortable and clean. We would highly recommend the home to other travelers. Overall, the best part of our trip was all of the memories we created. Thanks for sharing your home with us.

Beautiful Property!
What a fantastic property to get away and take time to simply enjoy the distance between the hustle of the city. This was a work trip but wanted to take advantage of the rates to stay somewhere better than another hotel. The cabin was extremely clean and well kept with easy access. I highly recommend booking this property if you're alone or a family of 5!

Great cabin, lots of little details taken care of!
We loved our weekend getaway at this cabin! One of the nicest rentals we’ve ever stayed in. We had a brief snag upon arriva with the door code, but Lisa was very responsive and had it fixed in just minutes. The kitchen was well equipped, and it was great not having to bring linens, trash bags, TP, and all the little things that can add up and take up valuable space! We enjoyed the hot tub, played with puzzles, and liked both the solitude as well as the short drive back into town. TV service was perfect, and the couch comfy for us to take in some March madness and a spectacular UVA win! The views from the porch and hot tub were also fantastic! Thanks again for sharing your cabin with us.

What a great way to escape it all and black bear lodge has exactly that. With stunning views and nature at its finest. Loved hearing the cows moo and listening to the bears across the way. Just sit on porch with a cup of coffee and take it all black bear lodge has to offer and you won’t want to leave,,

Impeccable cabin, wonderful views !
Our family of 6 stayed here for 3 nights. What a beautiful place ! The lodge/cabin is immaculate, very clean and you have no doubts owners take a good care of it. All information was readily accessible from bunch of brochures in the lodge, but obviously the correspondence before our arrival was of even importance. Owners responded quickly to all our inquiries and with abundance of information. We used the jacuzzi, the fire pit and the barbacue oven. Everything worked great ! However, the VIEWS from the porch are the biggest attraction of this house. I mean, beautiful is just not enough to describe it ! We were so lucky to have some wet weather first day with some clouds, the fog was carried in different directions and this made everything so DRAMATIC, then the rainbow came, I have never seen one like that before ! Next day again some fog in the AM, making it all look like floating in the skies ! Astounding ! The next day we had clear skies and views of the whole valley unobstructed. So each day we have sat on the porch, admiring different views and different happenings. I could sit there for days and just glue myself to this natural wonderful spectacle! Amazing ! We want to come back in the fall, maybe next year, the sooner the better..

Stunning, immaculate, had everything for our family!
We stayed at the Black bear lodge in the middle of June with our 3 kids- ages 7-13. Our kids wanted to stay forever. The lodge was spotless and the owners have thought of everything, we really appreciated all of the light switches labeled! I love air conditioning and it worked perfectly, the beds were so comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. We spent our days hiking in the Shenandoah National Park that was easy to get to, and our nights “binge watching” the amazing view from the porch. We would recommend this lodge to anyone who appreciates how much work these owners put into creating such a wonderful environment.

Absolutely Beautiful!!!
What can be said about this amazing cabin in Virginia? We had such a great time in the area doing so many things....the caverns, the wineries, and the National Park. At the end of the day we got to go back to the Black Bear Lodge and enjoy all it had to offer. So many amenities that were incredible. You can’t go wrong with this place. Can’t wait to go back again....that’s a definite. Breathtaking!!

Don't be afraid of this bear! Great property.
Four of us stayed and were extremely comfortable. With weather in the teens and twenties, the house stayed quite warm with the gas fireplace going on the main floor. Although we did not use the lower floor, there is a ton more space downstairs. You could easily have two couples with kids or 6 adults with plenty of room. The house is a very clean, well maintained, and one of the best-stocked houses I have stayed at in the Luray area. Everything we needed was there. Extra Towels, blankets, toiletries, even a wine bottle opener! Hot tub next to the firepit makes for a cozy evening in the cold, and without the firepit going you have pretty dark skies for some darn good star gazing. I'd say the skies are magnitude 4 to 4.5 naked eye. Not too shabby for the astronomers out there. Beautiful place, gorgeous location. Thanks for having us!

Fabulous
Wonderful views! Great decor, clean, and loved that all light switches were labeled. No flipping multiple switches to find the right one. Homeowners were extremely responsive to any question that we asked. Looking forward to coming back in the future.

Amazing Views, Clean and Spacious Cabin
My friends and I spent a weekend here in August 2017 and had a fantastic time! It was the perfect amount of space for three couples (6 people total) -- each couple had their own bedroom AND their own bathroom. The house is beautiful and impeccably well kept. We really appreciated how much thought the owners put into everything -- there were helpful instructions posted throughout the cabin. The kitchen was well stocked, and there were plenty of towels and sheets for everyone. However, the bath towels were a little musty, so I would recommend bringing your own. We loved grilling on the patio, making bonfires in the fire pit, and especially enjoyed the hot tub. The views from this cabin are AMAZING. Since the house looks down on a main road, it's not very private, but a few cars driving by weren't too big of a deal. It rained one night, and we were even able to stay outside and play games on the covered porch. There was plenty of space for us to set up a corn hole game in yard. The only thing missing from the patio was a dining table and chairs, but they do provide a folding table and plastic chairs you can set up. We didn't see any wild animals, but one night we did hear something howling (a coyote?) pretty close to the cabin. But we ran inside before we could find out what it was lol. It's in a great location -- we went tubing on the Shenandoah River and it was only about a 35 minute drive. Only about 10 minutes from Luray, which was helpful when we ordered pizza one night. There's even a winery about a mile down the road! Overall, this cabin was the perfect mountain getaway and we're already planning our next stay.

Thank you for the comment about the towels; we switched detergents a couple weeks ago and as soon as we saw your review we went over the home to check the towels - and you are right, they don't smell fresh. So we re-washed everything; thank you again for letting us know. The lesson here: don't buy laundry detergent just because it's on sale!

Clean, well kept, stocked well to meet all of our needs, overall exceeded our expectations.
Black Bear Lodge was fantastic. The views are amazing and did not disappoint, even on the 4th of July....We were able to see fireworks from several areas in the mountains while sitting on the deck of the cabin.....it was AMAZING!! There are many options of things to do and stores to shop at in close distance to the cabin, very convenient. The cabin itself is spacious, clean and well kept. It was also stocked with everything we needed. I was impressed with how nice everything was, from the dishes, to the bedding, the beds, the furniture, it's clear the cabin is well taken care of. The owners are great to deal with and send you information about the cabin and the area prior to your visit that is very helpful. Thank You for a great family vacation!

This cabin suited all our family's needs for a weekend wedding.
We used this cabin for lodging and as a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The owners were very helpful, especially with venue service for: clearing the lower level, directing parking, working with catering vendors, and then moving the rec room furniture back in place an hour after the dinner ended. The views were gorgeous, especially from the upper deck. The interior is spacious for 6 and with the wrap-around deck & when dining in lower level we accommodated 40 with ease for a dinner. The furnishings, kitchen, baths, bedrooms, & laundry were all more than adequate. We highly recommend this property & would return again. The owners are great!

Black Bear Lodge provided the perfect back drop for our daughter's college graduation. The lodge was clean upon arrival and provided everything we needed for our family gathering. I would stay here again in a heart beat. Thanks for providing a great place!

Wonderful property
Beautiful location overlooking the mountains and valley. The property had everything we needed for our group of 3 adults and 3 children and was very clean, spacious and well presented. We enjoyed using the hot tub and fire pit in the evenings. We only stayed 2 nights and our only regret is that we would all have loved to stay longer!

Exactly what we were looking for!!!
This was the perfect cabin for what we had in mind. Our party included three couples and we had just enough space to unwind together while having a blast and spending quality time with one another. The house had everything we needed from cooking utensils to throw blankets. Plus, the owners were extremely helpful and accommodating. We would definitely recommend this property to any group of friends or family looking to do an intimate, getaway trip!

100% Accurate in Decription and Photos
This property is new construction, extremely clean and well maintained. I was delighted to see the same antique dresser (Virginia Maple Leaf) in the 2nd bedroom that my father used in his youth and which I continue to use today. The master bedroom bed was very comfortable as were the bed linens. The kitchen was well equipped for our pseudo gourmet cooking. The gas fireplace makes the living room so warm (hot, really) that, even in midwinter, it becomes clothing-optional. Speaking of which..the outdoor hot tub, while private from neighbors, is visible form the road. And the road, which does fall into the categoary of "country road," goes directly into the town of Stanley (convieient for a grocery store run) just a mile or two away so there is some traffic, especially during the day. I selected Black Bear Lodge primarily for its views rather than one of the two other slightly smaller properties further up the hill which are more tucked into the woods (same owners). In hindsight, and especially considering that in the winter, with no leaves on the trees, everyone has mountain views, I might have chosen one of the other properties simply for more of a natural/secluded experience. That said, I highly recommend this rental. The views are some of the very best in the state! Only complaint (and this very specific and goes for any vaca rental anywhere, but seems more appropriate in VA wine country), is better red wine specific glasswear..though I did appreciate that there were glass rather than plastic white wine glasses. We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay at the Black Bear Lodge! Just one comment that needs to be added regarding the privacy of the hot tub. The home is located upon a hill, overlooking the valley and the surrounding mountains. While the guests have a view of the valley and the road below, those on the road below cannot see the lower level of the home nor the hot tub due to the elevation. Just wanted to clarify for those looking for privacy!

Black Bear Lodge was the perfect choice for a quiet and relaxing weekend getaway! All complimentary reviews of the property and its owners are 110% appropriate, and I would recommend this listing to anyone visiting the Luray, VA area. Not only were the property and amenities clean and perfectly maintained, but the owners were very responsive to any questions and took a genuine interest in ensuring the perfect travel experience. This is a very nice property. Everything is as advertised and it was in top shape in terms of cleanliness. The view from the deck is spectacular. With the finished basement, it has a lot of room to roam around for any rainy or stay-in days. Convenient to SNP as well as Luray.

Fantastic Get-away
This was our 2nd time renting the Black Bear Lodge. It is such a wonderful cabin with an incredible view -- and all the amenities. Our family loves the opportunity to get away from the day-to-day hustle bustle and relax in such a beautiful setting. Enjoyed hikes in the Skyline Drive, walking/jogging the Greenway, cooking out, Hershey S'More's, playing games, and the kids love the hot tub. DirecTV and wifi allows us to stay connected but the best part is just hanging out as a family and creating memories for our kids to last a lifetime. We hope to come back soon!

WOW!!! What a view!!!!!!
The Black Bear Lodge was by far the most accommodating cabin that four ladies from Pa have stayed in. We have been coming to the Shenandoah Valley for the last four years and Black Bear Lodge was just what the doctor ordered. The cabin is well maintained-VERY CLEAN-and fully stocked with any need that you may want. It provided us with comfort when wanting to unwind and sit and chat, yet still when the need arose to be able to just have some alone time or take a nap. Plenty of open airy space to move around in. The kitchen/living area upstairs flows right into each other so if you want to cook in the fully stocked kitchen you are still a part of the action going on in the living room. LOVED THAT!! The views from all areas of the cabin are spectacular. You can see for miles down into the valley and see the beautiful mountains. In the early mornings you can hear the roosters crowing and the cows sounding through the valley. I would not hesitate to book again in a heart beat. Kudos to owners Lisa and Jim!!

Beautiful! Very clean.
Our whole family loved this home. My nine year old, Katie, told me that one of her favorite things was the wood in the cabin. It makes it very cozy and I know that she LOVED the hot tub. She was in it a couple times a day! The view is also amazing. The Shenandoahs are beautiful and this home allows for the beauty to be appreciated! It made for a very relaxing Christmas vacation.
