  • The plantation received its name because it was the location of Captain John Smith's "New Fort," built in 1609, located directly across the James River from the Jamestown colony. The fort was quickly abandoned due to dry rot and a rat infestation.[4] The same land was later given by Chief Powhatan to John Rolfe as a dowry for the hand of Pocahontas when Rolfe and Pocahontas married. If you want to step back into time and history this is ideal. Our pet loved all the adventures on the trails and running around the yard. The dinning room was my favorite room. We ate all our meals in there in front of the fireplace. I felt as if we were eating and living in a historic home in Williamsburg, but better because of all the private land around us! Finding the Fairy Tree was a bonus.

This property was an amazing way to experience the historic area. My kids loved their attic bedroom and all the nooks and crannies. We enjoyed the art and especially the antiques that Cliff and Joy used to make the home feel authentically 18th century. Cliff was so kind and spent time answering our questions about the property upon arrival. I highly recommend this space for any family who wants to experience a historical getaway!

Charm & History Abound

My mom, sisters and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The clean, welcoming property was so much fun to explore and enjoy. Staying at this historic property added so much charm to our vacation which included Jamestown and Williamsburg. Great spot for a historic visit

Very cute, loved how the theme fit right in with our Colonial Williamsburg visit. Excellent hosts, very accommodating. We did not have the pleasure of meeting Joy, but Cliff was wonderful! Got a lot of information and history of the house and other stories about the area. Cliff was also very helpful in tending to a small issue that occurred right after arrival. A. Thank you!

Amazing Place to Stay

If you love history and are visiting the Williamsburg area this is a perfect place to stay. The house and grounds are amazing and filled with all types of historic anecdotes. The beds were super comfy and there is ample space for a large family or multiple groups. We are agreed that after spending a week visiting all the historic sites the Williamsburg area has to offer staying at this property was the highlight of our trip. Thanks so much!

Another idyllic stay

This is the third time my family and my brother's family have rented this house together for a long weekend, and each visit has been more wonderful than the last. Lightwood Forest

Beautiful and romantic property. The house is lovely and the surrounding property is amazing. Well equipped kitchen. Lightwood Forest is close to Jamestown and Williamsburg across the river.

Historic Getaway

The house is extraordinary and the location was just as beautiful. The Lightwood House while decorated impeccably, has a very home-like feeling to it. It is very private, and for those of us who prefer the rural lifestyle, it is perfect. We had a fabulous time. The house is clean, the appliances worked, check-in was easy and everything else is exactly as advertised. The hosts were very responsive to questions, and were willing to help out in every possible way. Staying at theThe Lightwood House was a memorable experience!

Stay in the past

We had an amazing time at this property! Cliff is very responsive and a great host. The kids loved being able to “stay in the past” but have modern day amenities (I.e. A/C, and running water!). Staying here created an immersive experience added on when not in Colonial Williamsburg. We would definitely return.

Beautiful historic home just outside Williamsburg

The house is absolutely magical. It’s like stepping back in time. So many incredible details. The owners put so much time and energy into restoring it. It was such a special part of our visit to historic Williamsburg. I feel lucky we found it.

What a wonderful place to stay. A really great house that makes you feel a part of colonial history surrounded by a beautiful forest, English garden and a fun hiking trail from the front door. Cliff and Joy couldn't have been more gracious. Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown , Yorktown and the historic plantations are a short drive and ferry away. This is a amazing house a very unique stay

Cozy and relaxing

We love staying at Lightwood Forest! This was our second time enjoying a getaway there together with my brother's family, and it was even more lovely than our first one. The owner, Cliff, welcomed us to the house personally, and had spent all day setting up a beautiful Christmas tree and other decorations. He also came back one morning after I texted him to ask for advice about a gas fireplace that I couldn't figure out how to light. This house is an absolute dream come true if you want to spend time with family or friends, but have some spaces where you can be alone or in smaller groups from time to time and not always be all on top of each other. And the extensive grounds are perfect for rambling, wandering, hiking, strolling, and exploring -- as long as everyone knows what poison ivy looks like and how to avoid it! Which, happily, we all do. I think we will be staying at Lightwood Forest again next fall/winter, if at all possible.
