The first week of our 3 week stay at the property started on a Saturday. The house is in a convenient location and close to many of the nice restaurants and attractions in Sarasota.On the second Monday of our rental we woke in the morning to find rat droppings throughout the kitchen and living room floors and on the living room furniture. We called the property manager, who in turn called an exterminator. The property manager offered to send someone to clean the home, but we had already cleaned everything. The exterminator came the next day, he concluded traps needed to be set to catch the rats. He sent a different team out on Thursday. We found a few more droppings another morning so we cleaned and sanitized the two rooms again. Each time the exterminators came to set the traps, check the traps and take away the dead rats, we had to be there. Since the traps were not checked daily, there were times the smell of the dead rats, in the garage and from the kitchen air vents, became very unpleasant during the third week.Truthfully, it was a very unnerving and, we felt, unhealthy experience. Knowing that the rats were in the kitchen wall and garage attic and not knowing if they would be coming out at night did not make for a relaxing experience.This is not the way we were hoping to spend our vacation. VRBO and the property owner did refund a portion of our money, but all things considered we felt the amount was inadequate.
