If you like to think outside the box, this property is for you! Anyone can stay in a high-rise & lounge on the beach with 100 of your not-so-closest friends & then cruise out to dinner at 7 or 8 & wait two hours for a table. If that's what you're looking for, don't come here!
This is a quaint little comfortable house on a very private beach in a very remote location. Cat Island itself is not that populated, & the resorts & restaurants are not all clustered in one location. Things are spread out! A car is a necessity (watch out for potholes!) Yes, there is a restaurant close by (Da Pink Chicken). I heard the food is great, but I can't speak for myself because we went there at 5:45 on a Sunday, and the couple who owns/runs it had decided to close at 4:30 that day. That's how they roll on Cat Island! We went to the nearby convenience store to get coffee & dishwasher soap, but they didn't have either of those items that day. When you live on an island where a mail boat only comes once a week, it's not like walking into Kroger & having multiple brands of every item!
The day we arrived, we rented a car (Lana had it waiting for us at the airport), stopped by the store & picked up a few things (should have picked up more!), and drove to the house. Harrison King, caretaker, had already unlocked the house for us. Later, he came by with our homemade dinner -- fresh grouper & conch served with baked potato & salad. Dinner for 4 was $80 & we tipped him $20. Well worth it! Other locals came by during the week selling fresh fruit, flour biscuits (a Bahama favorite), & offered fishing excursions -- take them up on anything they offer! It helps them make money & it helps you have things you might not buy otherwise. Mr. King also brought us jelly coconuts, complete with straws & ready for drinking, and homemade conch fritters! Yum!
So come prepared to enjoy the uniqueness of this island & the locals. Sit on the front porch & watch the waves & never see another soul (well, we did see a couple of sharks near the shore). Just be sure to plan ahead. Plan your meals & bring any special ingredients from home & cook in the well-stocked kitchen. Bring extra toilet paper, dishwasher & washing machine pods & definitely coffee & filters! With good planning, you won't have to leave this beautiful place that often. Just sit on the porch, enjoy the palm trees and the beautiful view, and let the sound of the ocean soothe your soul!
