We didn't have a guide but haggled with a guy who approached us at the site (with a license) and he was fantastic. You really need a guide to understand what all you're looking at.

While still under construction, the UNESCO Monument temples and palaces are highly recommended to understand the true integration of religion and governance in Nepal.

If you are in a hotel in Thamel area and you are a good walker, you wont need taxi. It takes around 15-20 mins walk from thamel.
