The space
Craig Pond Wilderness Lodge is a private waterfront retreat tucked into the woods of Orland, Maine. Set along nearly 3,000 feet of private shoreline on spring-fed Craig Pond, the property offers a quiet, off-grid style experience designed for guests looking to unplug, explore nature, and enjoy authentic Maine camp living.
The property features multiple rustic cabins connected by wooded walking paths, gathering areas, and direct access to the water. Surrounded by forest and granite mountain terrain, the lodge offers a peaceful setting for kayaking, fishing, swimming, wildlife watching, hiking, and relaxing by the lake.
While the property embraces a remote wilderness atmosphere, guests are often pleasantly surprised by the strong 5G cellular service available throughout much of the camp. This allows those who need to stay connected to comfortably work remotely, attend video meetings, manage email, or handle business responsibilities while still enjoying the privacy and natural beauty of the Maine woods.
Big Moose is off grid, meaning it does not connect to the grid for power, however, it has been fitted with all the amenities needed to make for a comfortable getaway, such as a solar charged power bank that charges lanterns for needed lighting wherever helpful. it also provides power in the event a cpap machine is needed throughout the night.
Guests also have easy access to several nearby bodies of water including Alamoosook Lake, Toddy Pond, and the Orland River, making the area ideal for boating, paddling, and exploring Downeast Maine. Just outside the camp property is a public beach area on Craig Pond that guests are welcome to enjoy during their stay.
Within walking distance is the historic Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery, one of the oldest fish hatcheries in the country. The hatchery features a small museum and visitor areas that are open during the day, offering a unique look into Maine’s Atlantic salmon conservation efforts.
The property is also located near the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust, a well-known network of protected conservation land featuring scenic hiking trails, mountain overlooks, forests, wetlands, and wildlife habitats. Guests can explore miles of trails throughout the preserve while experiencing some of the quiet natural beauty that makes this region of Maine so special. The conservation area adds an incredible opportunity for hiking, birdwatching, photography, and outdoor recreation just minutes from the property.
Originally operated as a boys camp for over 100 years, the property is now being thoughtfully restored while preserving its historic camp character and wilderness feel. Guests can expect a rustic North Woods atmosphere with modern touches added where practical, while still embracing the simplicity and charm of a traditional Maine camp experience.
Whether you're looking for a quiet family getaway, a basecamp for outdoor adventure, or simply a place to disconnect from busy life, Craig Pond Wilderness Lodge offers a unique setting that feels remote, peaceful, and deeply connected to nature.
Guest access
Guests will have access to the Big Moose Cabin, the nearby dock area, shoreline access, and the immediate outdoor areas surrounding the cabin during their stay.
Please note that portions of the larger Craig Pond Wilderness Lodge property are currently undergoing restoration and renovation work as we continue bringing the historic camp back to life. At this time, the main lodge, dining hall, kitchen facilities, maintenance areas, storage buildings, and certain other structures on the property may be off-limits to guests for safety and privacy reasons.
However, as renovation projects are completed, additional guest spaces may become available during your stay or prior to your arrival. Areas such as the dining hall, lodge, gathering spaces, or other shared amenities may be opened for guest use as they are restored and prepared for occupancy.
We ask that guests respect all marked private or restricted areas during their visit. The guest areas have been intentionally selected to provide privacy, waterfront access, and a peaceful wilderness experience while restoration efforts continue elsewhere on the property.
Guests are still welcome to enjoy the surrounding natural areas, nearby public beach access, walking access to the Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery, and the many nearby lakes, trails, and conservation areas throughout the region.
