We got off on the wrong foot with this rental. The rental company - my VR host - made us very uncomfortable, asking us to send scanned images of our IDs to them via email. When we asked why, they never offered any explanation other than it was required. A simple “it’s like a hotel” or “we want to make sure you’re not cooking meth” would have sufficed. Perhaps more frustrating was that they did not offer a secure method for us to send it to them. A really naive approach to Internet security. We ended up sending a scanned copy with just a face and picture and everything else redacted.
There are great things about this place. The fridge and microwave look new. The fireplace is awesome. The location can’t be beat (although the Mountaineer app does not pick up here if you want to head to Alpine — you have to take the bus).
However, the dishes are clearly the Owners’ old pots and pans and plates, ie, the ones you’re done using at home so you take them to your cabin. The bathroom fans are loud and grimy, the bathrooms are old and show it, and the pull out bed, beds, and sheets all clearly had a lot of use.
It wasn’t wholly unclean, but it felt a lot like a college apartment with dudes living in it. Sure, they cleaned and picked up, but you could never quite get comfortable or want to stay there more than a day or two. There is a degree of this in every rental, but at this place I just couldn’t quite shake the feeling that the comforter wasn’t washed between our stay and the previous guests.
If the owners had been running this, and we’d have met them, we probably would have felt a lot more comfortable. But to start with that management company and then come to this place, we would not recommend booking for more than $100/night.
