This was such a disappointing stay. After having to cancel a "true" vacation because of Covid, we opted to stay in-state and though it would be safe to stay at a private home. Everything went awry from the very beginning. We were provided the wrong code to get in. We couldn't get ahold of homeowner and after traveling 6 hours and waiting outside in the heat, we were very frustrated. We finally got through to the cleaning person to get a new code. Although not a huge deal, but it only has a small window air conditioner in the bedroom which was so loud, we couldn't sleep.
Home was claimed to have enhanced cleaning practices due to Covid, but this was a lie. It was full of bugs and ants in the kitchen. There were even ants in the toaster. Ants crawling up the walls. Bugs found in the bed and on my dog's chew toy. Windows and window sills full of dirt and bugs. Bathroom door was grimy. Light fixtures in bathroom were caked in dust. Spiderwebs in living room and bedroom that had collected additional bugs. TV stand, bookshelves and under the bed was dusty. Sheets smelled musty. I called to discuss these issues but I couldn't get ahold of the home owner again. I was passed on to her daughter which lives 2+ hours away and didn't know how to handle it, claiming that her mom's phones weren't working. She offered to have the cleaning person come over but we weren't there and didn't feel comfortable with her being there alone at 6PM the night before we checked out, especially with the virus spreading so quickly. If she claimed to have cleaned this home before we arrived, details are obviously not her strong suit. I took several pictures and videos of the condition but VRBO won't let me post them here.
Homeowner responded to my complaint after we had already checked out and, in so many words, called me a liar about the condition of her home. And provided no apology for our disappointment.
In her words: "We found no evidence of bugs from your cleanup. Nor did we see a single ant, dead or alive or any cob webs.... You obligated yourself to pay for the rental when you stayed and refused to have [the cleaning person] come in and assist you with the problem. Therefore, as stated in the contract you signed when you booked your reservation, you agreed to the conditions of my agreement."
I am beyond disappointed by the treatment of the homeowner. Her details for safety and concern of others during a pandemic is shameful.
