Acerca de esta propiedad

Luxury Log Cabin with Private River Access, Hot Tub, Pool & Huge Deck in Luray

  • After living in the hustle of the Washington DC area, I searched for the perfect cabin getaway, a place that could genuinely transport you somewhere more restful, more grounded, more alive. A place where you could slow down, breathe, and maybe reconnect with the creative, inspired version of yourself that gets buried under deadlines and notifications. A place that felt like stepping into a beloved friend's family cabin. Not staged, not flipped, just real. I never found it. So I made it.

    The space
    Welcome to River Refuge.

River Refuge is a luxury heritage retreat for people who are done with generic and ready for something that actually feels like something. Nestled on the banks of the Shenandoah River inside a private, gated historic community, it is the rare combination of genuine 100-year-old character and every modern comfort you'd actually want. Thoughtfully renovated with high-end finishes including luxury granite, elevated kitchen and bathroom fixtures, premium furnishings, while holding onto every bit of soul that makes a place feel irreplaceable. Antique log walls. Stone fireplaces. All original artwork. A river fifty feet below the deck. This is the kind of refuge that quiets you down the moment you walk in.

This cabin has history. Real history. And you can feel it. Escape your busy overstimulated life and find refuge at the river.

In 1921, the Shenandoah River Lodge opened on these same banks, drawing guests from Washington DC, Baltimore, New York, and Philadelphia for decades. Their brochure called it "A Restful Retreat where the River and the Mountains Meet." The main lodge burned down in the 1960s, and the eleven original log cottages were sold off to private owners. River Refuge is one of them. Lovingly preserved, and thoughtfully expanded with an open-concept kitchen and living room addition that opens entirely to the river through floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, so the Shenandoah is never more than a breath away.

For over a hundred years, these logs have been breathing river air. The original chinking is still in the walls. The fishing lodge door numbers (6 and 7, before that was a thing!) are still on the bedroom doors. The wood burning stone fireplaces are original. The porches that have overlooked the Shenandoah since before the National Park existed are still here.

Walk up the lit path through the trees at night. See the warm glow of string lights on the deck. And then, before you even open the door, you'll hear it. The Shenandoah River rushing over the rock shelf below. Every single guest has the same reaction. They stop. They gasp. That moment is yours.

River Refuge comfortably fits four guests across two oversized king bedrooms, each with their own access to the shared Jack & Jill bathroom.

    ——— THE SPACE ———

    → Room 6 — The Olive Room

The original fishing lodge door number is still on the door. Inside, you'll find a genuinely oversized room. Sweeping, generous, and completely unhurried. A king bed dressed in crisp white linens with a deep olive green chenille duvet. It's earthy, grounded, and completely unexpected. A stone wood-burning fireplace. A cozy Restoration Hardware leather chair for reading or settling in by the fire. Flat screen Roku TV mounted above the fireplace (bring your own streaming logins). Blackout curtains for sleeping in as long as you want. A vanity with mirror for getting ready. Nightstand lamps with USB and USB-C charging ports built in. River-facing windows you'll want to crack open at night for cool mountain air, the sound of the Shenandoah, frogs, and the kind of sleep you forgot was possible.

    → Room 7 — The Burgundy Room

Same sweeping original log bones, same stone fireplace, same generous proportions. This one dressed in deep burgundy velvet over crisp white linens. Rich, romantic, the kind of room that makes you want to light every candle and open a bottle of wine. A luxe Restoration Hardware leather chair. Roku TV on a swivel mount above the fireplace. Blackout curtains. Vanity with mirror. USB and USB-C nightstand charging. River-facing windows for sleeping to the sound of the Shenandoah. An iron and ironing board are also in this room.

→ The Bathroom (Jack & Jill)

Both king bedrooms have their own private, lockable door into the shared Jack & Jill bathroom so each room feels completely self-contained with full privacy. A standing tiled shower, large vanity, toilet, and a hair dryer provided. We also provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash, washcloths, and makeup removal towels. Bath towels and beach towels are provided for every guest.

    → The Living Room

Two of the three walls are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass that opens completely to the river so the Shenandoah literally becomes part of the room. An oversized, extra-deep Restoration Hardware leather sofa and two swivel chairs face the water. A wall of string instruments, banjo, mandolin, two guitars, hangs ready to be played. A full bookshelf stocked with fiction, nonfiction, biography, and mystery so you can pull something off the shelf and disappear for an afternoon. Original artwork throughout, including a discovered 1970s sketchbook of Blue Ridge mountain scenes found behind a dresser, framed, and hung on the wall where it belongs. Luxe wool throws draped across every surface. Every light in the house runs on dimmers. A vintage wood-burning stove anchors the room with warmth (aesthetic only — it sets the scene perfectly). There is no TV in the living room and you won't miss it. The river view is the entertainment.

    → The Kitchen

Stocked for real, cozy cooking. SMEG drip coffee maker and French press. Ground coffee beans and tea bags provided. Electric stove, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, blender, toaster, and a hand mixer. Essential spices stocked. Premium pots, pans, and baking sheets. Full utensil set and glassware. Luxury granite countertops and rustic open shelving. Everything you need for slow breakfasts, proper dinners in, and everything in between.

    → The Wraparound Deck (Upper)

This is where you'll watch the sun go down over Kennedy Peak, the iconic Shenandoah hike that sits right on the horizon from your deck chair. A gas fire pit with sofa seating looks directly over the river. A dining table and chairs for meals under the open sky. Gas grill with propane provided. String lights throughout. Full details on the Kennedy Peak hike and other local favorites are in your guest guidebook.

    → The Lower Stone Patio

Tucked below the deck and open to the night sky, the lower stone patio is home to a private hot tub for four - jets, lights, and a river "soundtrack". Adirondack chairs and a sunning area. Towel hooks. Stars overhead.

    → The River

A private staircase leads from the lower patio directly to the Shenandoah. This exclusive access is for River Refuge guests only, which is genuinely rare on this stretch of river. When you're out on the water, you quickly understand how few properties sit directly on the Shenandoah with this kind of private access. Ours is one of them. At the bottom of the stairs: a beachy alcove, a massive hanging bench swing overlooking the rapids, and rock shelves you can wade right out onto. In the quiet of the morning, keep your eyes open. River otters, bald eagles, great blue herons, and other wildlife make regular appearances along this stretch of the Shenandoah. Bring river shoes. Bring your own kayak, canoe, or float tubes. You can launch directly from the property, or float down from Bixler Bridge (about 2 hours) and get out right here at River Refuge.

→ The Yard & Community Amenities

Next to the cabin sits a large open field to set up a round of croquet or disc golf and let the afternoon stretch out. River Refuge sits inside the private, gated Shenandoah River Lodge community, a historic enclave of original log cabins that has existed since 1921. Quiet, wooded, and completely removed from the noise of modern life. The community swimming pool is one of the largest private pools in the county and is available to guests Memorial Day through Labor Day.

    → The Laundry

A small washer and dryer are available for use during your stay.
