My father, daughter and I stayed here as a home base to do some biking and canoeing. The house is is beautiful and exceptionally clean, but the best part was the swinging bench on the porch overlooking the river. It's a very quiet and peaceful place.
The owner put together a binder of local activities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, art, music, and local lore. And there is an extensive list of restaurants on the fridge. We ate at New River Brewing in West Jefferson and the Loghouse in Lansing, NC (great homemade chicken and dumplings and fried okra).
There's a mile or two of dirt roads to get to the cabin, and with the twists and turns of mountain driving, it takes a little more time to get to your destination (or so it seems for a flat-lander like me). It was about an hour drive to the Damascus bike shop to take the shuttle to White Top station for the Virginia Creeper Trail. 30 minutes to Zaloo's canoe outpost, and about 20 minutes to Jefferson, which has a Food Lion and a downtown with lots of restaurants.
My 9-year old daughter gave the house two thumbs up and asked when we will be coming back.
