Lake Mapourika

Whilst driving in the early frosty morning in June on the final leg of our road trip around New Zealands South Island, we spotted a flash of Lake Mapourika through a little open space in the trees. We had to turn around to check it out, and were treated to a beautiful view of the morning mist rising from the lake.

On the west coast of New Zealand's South Island is Lake Mapourika, next to the stunning Franz Josef Glacier. Normally calm and as still as a mirror, if the weather is shining you can usually see the year-round glaciers across the lake. One of the best ways to experience it is at sunset by kayak with Glacier County Kayaks

This is a beautiful area to visit, we stopped for a bit of a fish - we didn't catch any trout but the scenery was very gorgeous with the fog above the lake
