Location was perfect, conveniently close to everywhere you want to go in Kyoto. House decorations are very interesting. Amenities are in excellent working order, house is clean. Host is very kind, helpful and accommodating. I would definitely go back and stay there. I recommend this house with high regards.

Our family enjoyed our stay here and it was the highlight of our trip to Japan. It's in a great location and easy to either walk or grab cabs. The house was fully equipped and very comfortable. It was nice to have everyone under one roof with easy access to coffee shops and restaurants. An experience we will never forget.

An unforgettable stay at this unique home. Our large family of 16 was easily accommodated and all ages very much enjoyed the Japanese experience together. The detailed house manual and English labels on all appliances were very helpful. The younger children were a little scared of the samurai costumes at first, but got used to it eventually. The owners went above and beyond answering our many questions and provided some great restaurant recommendations. A true gem.

Hawai’i ‘Ohana in Kyoto

Our group of eight friends and family had a wonderful stay in Kyoto. The house was large enough for everybody to have their space and yet still kept to the traditional Japanese style of living. Great location, good restaurants, nearby, and easy access. We would definitely recommend people to stay at this beautiful property!

Authentic & Prime Location

Akiko was incredibly helpful from the booking process I needed to modify as well as answering any questions I had. The Machiya was absolutely beautiful and is so authentic. There was plenty of room to accommodate our 6 adults which is rare to find. We were also amazed at how many bathrooms there were which made mornings easy for everyone to get ready for a day of exploring. We were also happy to be able to use Netflix in the evenings as we were resting our tired feet and bodies. The location is what made us ultimately select this Machiya. We absolutely loved taking the cute paver streets north into the Gion area and were able to easily go anywhere we wanted. There is so much to explore in the vicinity and it seemed most places were within 10-15 minutes walking. Plus so many food options nearby! We appreciate how easy it was to check in and out and thank Akiko for the wonderful stay ❤️

Amazing location with all the creature comforts of home

The place was amazing! The kids loved it and it was very private for the 3 families (11 people total) staying there. The two sets of washer/dryers, multiple washrooms and showers was a huge plus! The location was equally amazing as it was a short walk to the train station and Kyomizu-dera. You can't go wrong here.

Style and Sustance

This accommodation delivers on every level. The host interaction and resource materials at the property were excellent. The style and décor easily beat staying at a hotel. All of the amenities at the apartment were functional and easy to use. We occupied both floors and especially liked the Hanare Back Building. The neighborhood was a good mix of off the beaten path and convenience to major sites, shopping and dining.

Family Christmas Holiday

Beautiful old machiya updated with modern conveniences; warm floors, updated kitchen appliances. The machiya has beautiful tatami floors in some sections of the house and beautifully decorated with Japanese artifacts. This machiya comfortably accommodated our family of 11. Can’t say enough good things about the service provided by their efficient staff. We would love to stay here again or any of Akiko’s other properties.

We loved the Samurai House

We rented the entire house which was a bit of overkill for two couples but provided plenty of space and options for sleeping and hanging out. It was set up as two separate units each with own kitchen, laundry, baths and sleeping quarters. Modern but with traditional touches…screened rooms, tatami mats and interesting art. Two tatami style sleeping rooms and 2 western style double bed rooms. Very nice soaking tub looking into a small garden courtyard. Location was excellent within easy walking to Gion district, Nishiki Market and subway lines. Would return next time in Kyoto.

Absolutely amazing!

Our stay was absolutely perfect! The machiya is gorgeous and has absolutely everything you need. The owners paid a lot of attention to details (particularly appreciated all the stickers with english translations, so useful). Can't beat the location, we were able to walk to so many parks and temples. Close to restaurants and stores and so quiet at the same time. Absolutely perfect, do not hesitate to book. Communication with the owners beforehand was flawless. Thank you for an amazing experience.

Awesome Kyoto home

The property is stunning!! Very new and clean and modern yet with traditional touches and decor. Lots of room and space for a family of at least 10 of all age ranges. Loved the samurai statues! Location is very convenient to local stores, like a fish monger, convenience and grocery stores. And walking distance to the busier Main Street with the larger brand stores, restaurants and entertainment! The owner, Akiko is very accommodating and professional. If I ever visit Kyoto again would definitely love to stay here!! Thank you for making my visit to Kyoto a truly magical experience.

Amazing house!

We loved our stay in Kyoto. This traditional Japanese house looks like a museum because it has amazing decorations. There were 8 adults in our party and we had plenty of room. It was easy to get a hold of someone when we couldn’t figure out the hot water situation and it was resolved in minutes. The location is perfect and we could walk to geisha district and sites and restaurants. The stairs are steep in a traditional house so we put our oldest family members ( in their 80’s) on the first floor. We loved our stay and would definitely stay again while in Kyoto!

Amazing experience

I had my family at this home as well as some family friends. This is a very large space great for bigger groups. Comes with an attached guest house in the back. Strong ac units in each room. This location was also perfect for us its a quick walk to many restaurants and it is incredibly easy to get taxis from this location as well. Could not recommend this place enough it comfortably fit 7 people. Comes with everything you could need spectacular stay thank you!

Great spot in a great location

This Machiya was really cool! This felt like a unique and special place that felt more like Old Japan vs a hotel room. One of my guests complained a bit on sleeping on the futon on the mat, but we just added another futon. So Westerners be aware of the more traditional Japanese accommodations. My group loved it! Also of particular note the host was VERY accommodating. She went above and beyond any other VRBO host I have used. Many thanks Akiko!

Great location and house

Loved our stay!

Absolutely wonderful house. Modern but with authentic touches. Plenty of space for all of us. The owners were very helpful as well. Highly recommend staying here. It made our stay in Kyoto even more special.
