The home was amazing. Very well laid out for our family. We had three generations staying. I was impressed with how quiet the home was other than hearing the ocean outside. The home had all of the amenities and items we needed for lots of home-cooked meals, and time together at the house. Gail and Nikki were amazing hosts and always answered questions promptly. We named one of the lava rocks that came up during low tide turtle rock as every night there were anywhere from a couple to 10 turtles. We had an amazing time.

We had a fantastic stay at Hula Moon! Our group of six was very comfortable—each bedroom and bathroom was beautifully set up with fresh linens and amazing ocean views.The home was spotless, tastefully decorated, and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed and plenty of space to gather.The concierge was a wonderful bonus—checking in regularly and offering helpful local tips.We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it!

This was our third stay at Home of the Hula Moon. It is heavenly! The home is always clean and comfortable, with everything we needed. The ocean life and tide pools right outside are so spectacular! Our family loves this special place and looks forward to the next time we can stay.

We enjoyed Thanksgiving 2025 at Hula Moon and couldn’t have loved it more! Gail is an excellent host and was so kind and helpful in us planning our first trip to the Big Island. Nikki was a helpful host on island for us and shared some great tips to help us have a wonderful trip. We didn’t end up exploring as much of the island as we planned because our 4 boys wanted to stay and enjoy low tide there at the beach off the backyard. We couldn’t get enough of the turtles and exploring the tide pools. The house had the best stocked kitchen of all the vacation rentals we’ve stayed at! They had everything we needed to be able to enjoy Thanksgiving Dinner there at the house. We can’t wait to come back again!!

Our family group of 10 (2 children) stayed at this beautiful ocean and beach front home. It met the needs of each of our family members. From the readers in the group to the adventure seekers, everyone found the property enjoyable. Each room was beautifully decorated, had a clear view of the ocean, and had a bathroom either connected to the room or right outside the room. As a mom of the two children I appreciated the locking screen doors, fully equipped kitchen, and loads of beach items (chairs, umbrella, toys, and more). As a family we found all the common spaces to be great for gathering and making memories. From the backyard we saw turtles, tiny fish, beautiful birds, and whales! It was a perfect trip and we plan to return again!

We had a wonderful week-long stay with our family, which included two small children. The house is immaculate, and the pictures do not do it justice. The views are absolutely stunning. The property is in a perfect location, with easy access to restaurants and beautiful beaches. We loved Hapuna Beach and made great use of the beach chairs provided at the house. Gail and her concierge team were extremely accommodating and provided excellent recommendations. We even had a chef come to the home and hired a family photographer. We enjoyed watching sea turtles from the back porch and were lucky enough to spot a whale! Highly recommend this property!

Amazing stay

We had everything we needed, the home was beautiful and host was very helpful with recommendations. Everyone had plenty of space to relax. My son loved watching the turtles every morning. Highly recommended, best placed we've stayed on vacation.

Absolutely spectacular residence on Puako Beach. The photos and descriptions just don’t do this place justice. From the owner (Gail) to the concierge (Niki), communication couldn’t have been better. Mind as well have been a Four Seasons. The house is immaculate and is so well equipped we rarely wanted to leave. We traveled with multi generations (grandparents / parents / younger children) and all found things we love. The patio (lanai) should be in a magazine, with views that are incredible. The pool was a huge hit - kids and parents swam daily and lounged in the afternoons. The place is quiet, peaceful and private - perfect for a relaxing vacation. We would rebook this place in a heartbeat. Mahalo, Gail and Niki! Thank you for sharing this wonderful place with our family.

Absolutely beautiful and well designed property that has been maintained with care. The living spaces are well appointed, the kitchen is well equipped, and the multiple lanais are a fantastic place to relax. The beach front in the back yard is teeming with life - most notably turtles, but also all kinds of critters in the tide pools like eels, sea cucumbers, crustaceans, and more.The hosts are proactive and helpful - be sure and ask them about recommendations for the area and anything else you may need during the stay. We look forward to returning again at the next opportunity!

First Gail the owner and Niki on Island contact were amazing to work with. The house is amazing. They keep it in pristine condition ( hence a few house rules) Being right on the ocean, beautiful pool and the house has every amenities. Waking up to turtles in front every day. You do need to drive for restaurant, shopping etc. The little store near by really does not have much and very limited premade sandwiches so I would not count on food next door. Each bedroom is beautiful. A view from everywhere in the house. A nice quiet private neighborhood. We loved it and hope to go back soon.

Another dreamy vacation in the Home of the Hula Moon! This was the third time we were fortunate enough to stay at this fabulous dream house. From our morning coffee on the lanai, to gazes towards the sea, and ‘turtle island’ and then finally the amazing sunsets…this place is special. We were well cared for from start to finish. Nikki even brought the family a waffle maker upon request. We hope to return!!!

Magical time in Puako

We had the most amazing time during our stay in Puako thanks to the beautiful Home of the Hula Moon and the graciousness of the host (Gail) and property manager (Nikki). From the moment we checked in until the moment we left, our every need was met. The home is in a spectacular location, right on the beach which provides beautiful views of sunrises and sunsets. The home is very tastefully decorated and extremely well-maintained. It’s clearly the most well-stocked home we’ve ever rented, with high-end linens and an abundance of kitchen supplies. We felt pampered and never found ourselves in need of a single thing. The communication with both the host and the property manager was exceptional. They were always available and responded quickly with information and/or answers to questions. The detailed description of the house rules and home details set a foundation of clear expectations for our stay which was very much appreciated by me and my entire family. We enjoyed every minute of our stay and would love to come and visit again. Thank you Gail and Nikki for a vacation of a lifetime!

Another Incredible Vacation

This is our third time staying at the Hula Moon. As soon as you enter you are greeted with an unbelievable view of the ocean, we saw whales and turtles everyday during our 2 week visit. There is plenty of space for everyone to gather as well as having individual privacy. I can’t wait to plan our next visit..I miss the sound of the ocean lulling me to sleep each night. Thank you Gail and Niki for another amazing family vacation.

We Do Not Recommend This Property for Families with Children

We’ve rented over 50 luxury vacation homes, and this is the first negative review I’ve ever written. I felt obligated to warn other families.Despite the positive reviews, our experience was very different. If you are traveling with children, I strongly recommend avoiding this house.Doors leading to the pool can’t be locked from inside — we had to block them with furniture to protect our kids. The upstairs loft has a built-in desk easy for kids to climb, creating a 14-foot fall risk.We were told not to roll suitcases, warned to keep windows shut due to homeless concerns (despite no AC and hot temps), and signs everywhere told us not to touch anything — it felt like staying in a museum, not a vacation home.We received a call warning us about kids playing “too loudly” in the pool, and signs banned games like Marco Polo because it “drives everyone crazy.” Our kids were simply having normal, daytime fun.There’s no usable beach — the shoreline is rocky and unsafe for barefoot play.A neighbor aggressively yelled at a young female in our group over temporary roadside parking.We left the house spotless (confirmed by the property manager), yet were unfairly accused of causing damage — what was shown were tiny marks consistent with normal use.Other surprises: poop in the pool on arrival, wild boars roaming the yard, and no basic toiletries like shampoo.This was by far the least welcoming experience we've ever had.We do not recommend this property for families.

Beachfront serenity

The Home of the Hula Moon was a beautiful place to relax, enjoying the ocean views, scents, and sounds. We saw basking sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and even a whale spout from the lanai. The neighborhood was quiet. The pool area was secluded with gorgeous landscaping and the pool was a perfect temperature for cooling off.The home is spacious, comfortable, immaculately clean, and the artwork was an unexpected bonus. The family had plenty of room and the showers were superb. The owner and concierge were quick to answer questions and to make recommendations for local restaurants and activities. Overall, it was the best VRBO experience the family has had, and we hope to return!

Turtle Heaven

My family and I had a wonderful time, and we already want to go back. We went snorkeling almost every day, took sunset walks (saw eagle rays and squid), swam in the pool, ate outside. The weather was perfect (Thanksgiving).and the house lacked for nothing (extra refrigerators came in handy). The hosts took very good care of us - giving us tips and making sure everything was OK. Each night we had about 6 or 7 turtles right in front of the house on a rock.

The house, neighborhood, and location are amazing. This is truly a phenomenal gathering spot and an excellent way to experience the big island. We would highly recommend for friends and family gatherings. We travelled with small children and would book again without hesitation.

Beautiful House and Location

Great property for our group. The pool was great to have. Turtles everywhere on the beach, rocks and when snorkeling out front. Quiet neighborhood. Great snorkeling out front and down the road where paid tours go…. Everything we needed for cooking meals and nice to have a spare fridge for all our drinks. All communications were great! Highly recommend!!
