House gets a 5 start review, driveway a 2
This is a beautifully designed, constructed, and maintained large log cabin right on Wallowa Lake. Great views of the lake, the East Moraine, and up the lake a peek at the mountains. Plenty of room for a group of friends or a family getaway. Kitchen was well-equipped and supplied with some basic oils and spices. Very clean!
Downside is the driveway. Listing says 4WD or AWD is recommend in winter, but you'd be better off having it all year around. We have a front wheel drive sedan and I was nervous about getting out, even in low gear. First time proceeded slowly and spun out in the gravel a little at the top, where it gets slightly steeper joining the road. After that I got up more momentum and made it out without spinning. If the drive were slippery with heavy rain or any snow or ice, I would not have made it out. There is parking for 2 vehicles and room to turn around as long as your vehicle is not too big and the two cars coordinate their efforts. So bottom line, although we loved the home, we would not return without AWD.
Also, this home would be hard to find and access safely the first time in the dark.
Finally, we found this home on VRBO, which we have used extensively and love, but it's managed by Vacasa of Oregon. Booking through VRBO we ended up paying double fees. Total fees were more than the rental price. Vacasa did provide very good management service. In the future if I see a home is managed by Vacasa, I will book directly on their site.
