Summary of the stay: It didn’t happen
Background: Our large family has been coming to GAT from the day after Christmas through NYE every year for 20+ years. Rain. Ice. Snow. Nothing has stopped us with the exception of the huge fire that claimed our rental and many others in GAT. We understand disaster/accidents happen and the owner of the fire cabin kept us in the loop daily, and some days almost hourly.
Compare that to our “stay” here. We get the check-in email at exactly 8am. Check-in was 4pm. We leave soon after 8am for our 7 hour drive.
2 hours into our drive with two family we get this message signed by the owners:
Hello I wanted to update you and let you know we found out our chalet has been affected by the extreme cold that came through the area and we are having to do some repairs. The cabin will not be available for the night 2 to 3 nights. Please let me know if you would like to modify the stay and we can try to help you find a place for the next two to three nights and once we are done you can keep the remaining few nights of the reservations. Alternatively you can cancel completely but it does appear places are in short demand. We are so sorry. GandR
We were on a stretch of interstate with bad internet and responded to their text and VRBO message asking for them to call us as the typos don’t make it clear and we needed their help to find a new place.
An hour late an owner doesn’t call, rather someone who said they were a family member and they knew very little and were sorry but they didn’t have any authority. I again asked for an owner to call me and they said they would try. “TRY”. I thought that was weird but to this day after 5+ requests via VRBO/SMS and the verbal above, I still have not had an owner or anyone call me to discuss/help.
I was told they would help us find lodging. That consisted of them sending us one VRBO link to a cabin twice the price that wasn’t in GAT, and get this, was already booked. That’s it. That’s the help they offered and gave.
I messaged them asking if it was ready since they apparently forgot about us and they had the gall to inform me the rental would be ready on 1/2/2023, the day after we were supposed to leave. What a coincidence. It was ready only after we left.
The place may be nice, but we never saw it beyond the drive by we did and we say no work trucks. What I can tell you is the owners provided worse customer service than Walmart or the Post Office. AVOID THEM!
