Quinta Esperanca is an absolutely wonderful find! Set in truly beautiful gardens with a fabulous, uncrowded pool, the room is airy and comfortable with a small, useable kitchenette. The showstopper though, is the balcony and the fantastically wide view down to the harbour. It’s amazing at all times of the day! The hosts have a vision for the Quinta and we loved being part of their journey to refurbish the whole property. It is a unique place; although the photos show the view, they can’t capture the special ambiance. It is a very steep walk into town and back (about 20 mins each way). There is a bus stop outside the Quinta but we didn’t find it ran regularly enough to be useful. The walk into town was manageable and enjoyable for us in any case and we were able to explore Funchal fully on foot from the apartment. Apart from the bakery and a small supermarket, everything else is down by the harbour in the town centre. Martim gave us lots of good advice re trips and recommendations which we followed; the Jeep safari was fantastic and downloading the Bolt app enabled us to see around the island and saved us having to hire a car. One word of caution- the upstairs room is only accessible by a very steep outside spiral staircase. Not a problem for us but it’s worth knowing in advance! Would we come back to the Quinta? Yes, in a heartbeat!

Très bon séjour. Le balcon est très agréable avec une très belle vue, c'est très calme au sein d'une résidence jolie et une belle piscine. L'accueil est excellent. à environ 10/15 minutes à pied de la vieille ville de Funchal. Facile de se garer à côté. La seule chose est que ce n'est pas adapté pour des personnes âgées avec une forte montée depuis la mer et un escalier en colimaçon. Nous avons passé un très bon moment.

Very special

Quinta Esperanca is very special. It is a beautiful old characterful house with lovely gardens but with modern facilities in the studio. It is easy to get into Funchal and enjoy all the city has to offer. We loved to return back to our terrace after dinner to watch the lights come on across the city as darkness fell.

Beautiful Oasis!

We had a fantastic stay! The apartment was very cozy with stunning views over the harbor. After long days exploring the island, we always looked forward to coming back to our oasis and relaxing on the terrace! The grounds are beautiful and well cared for. Very easy parking if you rent a car. The walk into old town is only 20 minutes (all downhill). Very easy to catch a bus or Bolt if you don't want to walk back up the hill! The host, Helena, was excellent and made us feel very welcome and at home throughout our stay. If you want an authentic, intimate experience and prime location, then this is the place!

Quiet Quinta above the old town

Property is very characterful with great views. We very much liked the area being a little away from the main tourist zones but we like to walk. Hosts and staff all very lovely and helpful. We were two floors up via a metal exterior spiral staircase, we rather liked it and it is well mentioned in the advert but it would not be suitable for everyone. Mattress was rather hard and we did not get used to it after 2 weeks. Swimming pool is wonderful and if we are back in Funchal we would try and book the same place again. Very pleased we did not stay in the Lido area as to us it is vastly over developed.

Superb Quinta

Great studio with everything you need for a wonderful stay. Amazing view to while away your time with a book and booze. My favourite area of the Quinta was the relaxing large shared seating area great for whatever the weather. Lovely gardens and pool. Will be staying again. Visit to the local bakery Mariazinha is a must.

Fantastic apartment

What a fantastic place with great views and a beautifully groomed garden. Lots of homely touches. So glad we found this place, we loved it here and cant wait to go back. Worth mentioning is that the walk into town is 20 mins downhill and a steep walk back but the bus stops right outside the gate and taxi's are b/w 5 & 10 euro's depending on who you get. The access to the apt is via a spiral staircase which we loved but worth considering. Helena was so helpful and we knew she was contactable if we'd needed her. 10/10.

We will come back ...

The Quinta is a wonderful property in which we felt very comfortable during the two weeks of our stay. You can walk in 15-20 Minutes into town or the harbor and enjoy everything the city has to offer. We only discovered how important this is during the course of our vacation. There are hardly any places on the island with a larger town center. The houses are rather scattered on the slopes and the route to the nearest restaurant or to the sea etc. can be quite long. So if you want to enjoy the island's landscape together with the infrastructure of the old town of Funchal, this is the place for you.

Petit coin de paradis sur Terre

Très bien situé à Funchal pour visiter toute l île magnifique de Madère, nous avons été enchantés de la beauté du logement et des lieux du soin et de la classe de l hébergement. Fabulous apartment in a beautiful Quinta

This is lovely apartment with stunning views over Funchal and its harbour with everything a couple will need for a perfect holiday. The apartment is part of an original 19th century Quinta with beautiful gardens and large swimming pool which is being lovingly restored by our brilliant hosts Helena & Roberto who were so helpful in every way even organising our airport transfers, trips out and restaurant recommendations. The apartment/Quinta is only a 15 minute walk to the town of Funchal with all of its bars, restaurants, shops and many other attractions. If walking is not for you then there is a bus stop in front of the Quinta with regular buses to take you to and from the town and a plethora of taxis also available. We enjoyed visiting the town and cable car to the botanical gardens plus a whale watching boat trip and mountain walks but we also enjoyed chilling around the beautiful large swimming pool which we had to ourselves most of the time. Overall we have enjoyed a perfect holiday in a perfect apartment and setting with perfect hosts. Thank you Helena & Roberto for making our stay so enjoyable and relaxing we shall return.

The view is real! 😍

Everything is even more beautiful then in the photos. I had a fantastic stay at this beautiful Quinta. The garden alone would be worth a rave review. The pool is wonderful and I had it to myself. Even fully booked there are few other guest, all friendly enjoying the privacy. My private balcony was like an extra room where I spend whole evenings. The weather is so agreeable that I slept with open doors and could see the ocean from my comfortable bed. The apartment is lovingly put together with fine wooden furniture and well equipped. The whole situation is excellent. You have view of Funchal bay with the busy hotel complexes far away. Yet the walk into town is quick (if you don't want to wait for the bus that stops right and front of the building) and the grocery and bakery around the corner will set you up with anything you need. I would love to go there again in a heartbeat!

Die Beschreibung passt. Die Anlage (großer Garten und Swimmingpool) und die Unterkunft (Ausstattung) sind in in einem guten bis sehr gutem Zustand. Wir hatten das enorme Glück, ein Apartment im 2. OG zu erhalten und konnten somit schon zum Frühstück und Abendessen (Selbstversorgung) den herrlichen Ausblick auf den Hafen und die Innenstadt von Funchal genießen. Nur das Bett bzw. die Matratze bedürfen einer Überholung (die Springfedern sind deutlich zu spüren). Die Kommunikation kann ebenfalls verbessert werden: die genaue Hausnummer mussten wir selbst herausfinden. Die Bushaltestelle um die Ecke ist seit 15.03.2023 wegen Straßenarbeiten weiter oben b.a.w. außer Betrieb. Eine Bitte um Toilettenpapier wurde ignoriert und die Frage unserer Vermieterin nach unseren Reisedokumenten 3 Tage nach dem Einchecken hätte auch im Vorfeld geklärt werden können. Trotzdem würden wir erneut buchen!

Lovingly restored Quinta in quiet setting yet close to Old Town

The spacious apartment is located on the first floor of a beautifully restored Quinta set just above the Old Town in Funchal. The house stands in it's own private,well kept gardens with swimming pool available for the use of guests.There are 3 other apartments located in the Quinta but all on the ground floor and all private from each other so whichever one you choose you will still have a unique stay.The Orchid apartment is accessed via the original cast iron spiral staircase which leads on to a communal terrace with fabulous views of the bay.The apartment is then up a few more steps to it's own private balcony.There are 2 original wooden shuttered french doors leading in to the apartment which in itself is very nicely furnished with solid wooden floor,kitchenette,dining table and very comfortable king size bed.There is a good sized shower room leading off from the main room.There is everything you need for self catering if you wish including a 2 ring cooker,microwave,kettle,toaster,coffee machine and a large fridge freezer .There is strong wi-fi and tv with cable channels and netflix if that's your thing.There is a bus stop immediately outside the gate which goes into Funchal (5 mins) or up to the botanical gardens (10 mins). It is located on a hill but then again most places are in Funchal.We walked in and out of the centre most days but the bus is a great option if the climb back is a bit steep .There is an excellent bakery and cafe plus small shop just 5 mins walk away. Helena is a great host and can organise various trips for you all of which are detailed in the room.I strongly recommend the House tour which includes High Tea on the terrace which was wonderful. The Quinta was previously used as a hotel in the 1920’s and Helena has ensured that the restoration work carried out has retained it’s character perfectly.It is the complete opposite of the concrete jungle that continues to grow in the hotel zone to the west of Funchal and is so much better as a result. The guest book in the room has many reviews from repeat guests which I always think is the best recommendation you can get. If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay with genuine character,stunning views and yet still close to the centre I honestly don’t think you’ll find anything better.We shall certainly return.

Beautiful house and garden

The house is beautiful and has a great garden. It is a quiet paradise away from the streams of tourists, but located close enough to the centre and the old town with many restaurants.
