  • Final resting place for Brother Joseph, who created the art that is known as Ave Maria Grotto.This is a cemetery of only monks in residence at St. Bernard Abbey. Ave Maria Grotto, in Cullman, Alabama, is a landscaped, 4-acre park in an old quarry on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey, providing a garden setting for 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous religious structures of the world. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 24, 1976, and to the National Register of Historic Places on January 19, 1984. The stone and concrete models are the work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard's Abbey, who devoted some 50 years to the project, the last three decades (1932 to 1961) almost without interruption. They incorporate discarded building supplies, bricks, marbles, tiles, pipes, sea shells, marbles, plastic animals, costume jewellery, toilet bowl floats and cold cream jars. Born in 1878 in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Brother Joseph was maimed in an accident that left him slightly hunched due to cervical kyphosis. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager, settling in northern Alabama. Soon afterward he began studying at the newly founded Benedictine monastery of St. Bernard, where he took his vows in 1897. Br. Joseph was not allowed to be ordained as a priest, due to the rule of the period that stated any man with a distracting disability could not be ordained a priest. He ran the monastery’s power plant and was, even by a monk's standards, a withdrawn, quiet man. Brother Joseph rarely left Alabama, where he died in 1961.

We stayed 3 nights with children aged 3 to 9. We come to this area every couple years to visit family. Driving 11 hours, we just wanted something comfortable. This cabin had plenty of space for us all. Everything we needed. Previous reviews mentioned a lack of cleanliness but for a cabin, it was just as clean as i expected it to be. Previous reviews mentioned issues with furnishings, however, it was nice to come in and sit in a comfy broken in recliner after a long drive. It was like being in a comfortable home. Only downfall was loud music playing from about 9/10pm until close to 7am the next morning. I am not sure where it was coming from. Our children are used to being in the middle of nowhere and it being quiet, so we figured they would feel at home here. The noise from the music was a bit much so they ended up with us all in one room at night. That would be my only complaint about our stay and has nothing to do with the cabin or owner of the cabin. I would probably still consider staying here again on our next trip down south.

GREAT location- needs deep clean and new mattresses.

This is a very serene location with close access to hikes in the Bankhead Forest. The owner gave very clear instructions to find the property and check in, though did not respond to initial questions about amenities like a fire pit. Owner also responded quickly when we arrived and made notification of a curtain that had broken and was on the floor prior to our arrival. The kitchen looked like it had what would be needed, but we only used the refrigerator. There were many towels. It was listed as "newly renovated" and there were some new vanities and curved edged sheetrock, but other floors that were carpeted were very stained and dirty. The fans, baseboards, etc were covered in dirt and the walls were scuffed and had small holes in them in various areas. The downstairs tub wouldn't drain during showers and sometimes you'd have to turn the upstairs shower on and off to get water pressure. All of this could have been overlooked if the sleeping arrangements were more comfortable... or if this was described maybe as a rough fish-camp. The mattresses were extremely worn out /uncomfortable and obviously very old (numerous fluid based stains and decades old patterns). One person in our party slept on the couch the second night to avoid the mattress and it was a better option. The lake was too low to be on the dock as it sat on slanted ground. The fact that there isn't year round water should be mentioned in the ad for those not familiar with the area. There are a few unsafe areas on the porch deck due to rotten wood, but the view is gorgeous. Again-- add new mattresses, some fresh bed linens and a deep clean and this property should stay booked year round!

I absolutely loved our stay at this property! It had everything we needed except for a toaster but that is very minor. Overall and wonderful stay and can't wait to book again!

Prefect lake getaway

My family of four including 2 year and 4 year kiddos with my sisters family of 4 including kiddos 11 and 6 loved the cabin! We have older teens as well that came out and enjoyed the lake. Our mom also joined in the fun. We all truly enjoyed our stay! It is a simple cabin on the lake but clean and plenty of room for our crew.
