We loved the stunning views from our back porch with easy access to the beach, just down the steps from the back deck. We also loved that Dauphin Island is not commercialized. No billboards, chain stores, or restaurants are allowed. We loved Pirate's Pizza and Wings so much that we ate there twice! This lack of commercialism makes for a pleasant, peaceful beach vacation. However, if you yearn for some activities to do, the ferry is a cool experience. It will take you (and your vehicle) to Fort Morgan in about 40 minutes. We did this and saw dolphins, all while enjoying the breezy ride on the ferry. Once you disembark, the ride to Gulf Shores is about 35 minutes, and Orange Beach is around 45. It's not bad at all considering that riding the ferry is like an excursion itself. Once there you can do all kinds of things. Just watch the time that the ferry leaves and ask the ferry workers how busy they expect to be. You may not have to arrive early to hold your spot.The beach was not crowded at Dauphin Island, and there were several beach chairs as well as toys provided by the homeowners. We could open our windows at night and hear the waves. However, there was no screen on the back door, and the mosquitos were everywhere, so we couldn't leave the sliding door open that lead to the beach.
