  • Final resting place for Brother Joseph, who created the art that is known as Ave Maria Grotto.This is a cemetery of only monks in residence at St. Bernard Abbey. Ave Maria Grotto, in Cullman, Alabama, is a landscaped, 4-acre park in an old quarry on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey, providing a garden setting for 125 miniature reproductions of some of the most famous religious structures of the world. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on February 24, 1976, and to the National Register of Historic Places on January 19, 1984. The stone and concrete models are the work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk of St. Bernard's Abbey, who devoted some 50 years to the project, the last three decades (1932 to 1961) almost without interruption. They incorporate discarded building supplies, bricks, marbles, tiles, pipes, sea shells, marbles, plastic animals, costume jewellery, toilet bowl floats and cold cream jars. Born in 1878 in the Kingdom of Bavaria, Brother Joseph was maimed in an accident that left him slightly hunched due to cervical kyphosis. He immigrated to the United States as a teenager, settling in northern Alabama. Soon afterward he began studying at the newly founded Benedictine monastery of St. Bernard, where he took his vows in 1897. Br. Joseph was not allowed to be ordained as a priest, due to the rule of the period that stated any man with a distracting disability could not be ordained a priest. He ran the monastery’s power plant and was, even by a monk's standards, a withdrawn, quiet man. Brother Joseph rarely left Alabama, where he died in 1961.

Jessica was fabulous with communicating and the home is absolutely immaculate. From the bedding to pillows on the bed…perfection. If you love to cook-you will be in heaven. Every kitchen gadget you would need is there. 10 out of 10.

Relaxing Lake Trip For Family

The house was immaculately clean. Great for large groups. The location on the lake is great because there's minimal stairs and hardly any boat or jet ski traffic because we are in a cove. This was the perfect quiet vacation that our family was looking for. Kitchen was fully stocked. Lots of places in the house for people to unwind and connect. We will be back!

Blended Family Vacation

Our first trip to the lake was a fabulous experience! The house had EVERYTHING and more!! We are a blended family with 5 adult children. They all brought their spouse or significant other and we had plenty of room. We enjoyed cooking family dinners in the well stocked kitchen. We are already planning a trip back next year!

Wonderful getaway spot!

Our family gathered for a 6-day reunion at the house. It was perfect for multiple ages and activities. We especially appreciated the wonderfully well-equipped kitchen and pantry, the child safety features on the porch and in the house, the fire pit, and the general comfort of the place! It's clear that the owners use the house and have set it up to be enjoyed by others. We enjoyed the pool table and kayaks. We'd recommend it highly to any group, especially one with older relatives who need to be on one level and small children.

Great for Gathering

This home was a meet-in-the-middle for our extended family to gather and celebrate our grandfathers 90th birthday! We looked forward to this trip since the spring and it did not disappoint. Our days as the lake were warm for December and the kids enjoyed playing outside so much. We came very prepared to cook for a crowd, but Jessica has stocked this kitchen well!! Even great leftover containers which was so helpful. The gate on the porch was great too for our adventurous toddlers who would have been harder to corral without it. It was wonderful and will be a memory that we’ll treasure. Thanks to Jessica and family for hosting us!

Amazing Weekend

This property is absolutely perfect and spacious for large groups. It was peaceful, clean, and has all the amenities needed for a relaxing getaway. The adults and children had the BEST time. We did not want to come home! We are already planning our next trip.

Emeral Cove was just WOW!!!

Ten years ago when our mother passed away, the six if us siblings and spouses decided to make a concerted effort to get together each year by renting a house for a few days to accommodate all of us. Emeral Cove significantly surpasses all of our other rentals thus far! The view is amazing...at sunrise, mid day and sun set! Some of us simply enjoyed to water view, while others dove in to the chilly May temperatures and others took the kayak out for a run around the lake. The location is also perfect for hiking, table games, movies, reading, etc. There was something for each of us to enjoy while we were there! The 5000 foot house has more than enough bedrooms and bathrooms to meet our needs and plenty of inside and outside places for us to gather in groups for reminiscing or for some time of solitude. The house is well appointed with every amenity imaginable, but the kitchen is especially well stocked, filled with all that one needs for cooking and grilling! Jessica patiently answered every question we had before arriving and proved to be the ideal host! We could not have asked for better. The six of us and our spouses left, determined that Emerald Cove will be a place we WILL gather again!

Beautiful! Great for family get-togethers or a gathering of good friends. House well-stocked with just about anything you might need. Host was very pleasant & very easy to work with. Would recommend highly!
