  • The Dock Street Theatre is Charleston's last surviving hotel from the antebellum period. The silhouette of its wrought iron balcony against the spire of St. Philip's church may be the single most photographed spot in the city. The main portion of the building was constructed around 1809 as Planter's Hotel. The hotel was built by Alexander Calder and his wife, who did so by renovating several pre-existing buildings at the site. The main entrance may not have been built until 1855 by J.W. Gamble. The hotel was used extensively by planters from the midlands of South Carolina, who traveled to Charleston during horse-racing season. It was noted for its wonderful food and drinks during this era, and the South's famous Planter's Punch may have originated here. Guests to the hotel passed through the recessed porch with brownstone columns, into the lobby, and up a grand staircase that ascended to a drawing room. While much of the interior has been altered, these elements of the antebellum hotel remain and were adapted in subsequent uses of the building. A series of additions to the hotel throughout the 19th and 20th centuries can be easily identified by differences in brick coloration. This theater is said to have been the first building built specifically for theatrical performances in America. Planter's Hotel occasionally housed one of the city's theatrical troupes, which performed at the nearby New Theatre during the mid-19th century. The most notable actor of this troupe was Junius Brutus Booth. Booth was the patriarch of an outstanding family of actors, which included John Wilkes Booth, President Lincoln's assassin. Junius Booth, who stayed at the Planter's Hotel, allegedly tried to kill his manager here in 1838. Today the Dock Street Theatre is home to the Charleston Stage Company, South Carolina's largest professional theater production company, and houses the city's Cultural Affairs office as well as The City Gallery, an exhibition space for local artists.

Amazing location and great staff. Just across the street from Charleston City Market in the hart of the historic downtown. Surrounded by amazing restaurants and steps from museums and shops. Friendly and caring staff. Breakfast, vine and cheese at 5pm and cookies and milk are included. A/C a bit loud.

An excellent location near the city market. The room was clean with an old world charm. The staff was pleasant. There are many shopping and eating opportunities within walking distance. One negative was the construction going on nearby.

There was a major construction project next door to this property, and directly behind our room there was heavy machinery and excavation that started weekday mornings at 6:30am, making it impossible to sleep in. Neither Expedia, nor the property upon arrival, warned us about this and it was a rather rude awakening. The hotel said that they warn guests about this via email one week in advance, but because I booked through Expedia I had no such warning. Not acceptable Expedia.

I'll start with the good. It's centrally located with a lot of food options nearby. You can easily walk to a lot of tourist attractions. The room was clean and they serve breakfast. Now for the bad, there is construction going on next door which the staff does not even acknowledge. Construction starts around 7am and can hear it from your room. Additionally, some of the staff seemed disinterested in engaging with the guests.

B //B lovely. Breakfast was very nice. Wine party and appetisers were delicious. Room very pretty.Staff was very nice, particularly the doorman. Problems were very noisy air conditioner, construction noise ext door starting at 7 AM, and the toilet seat was short and did not fit the elongated toilet.

Unfortunately there was a complete demolition of the property next door that shook my balcony room at 7am so we checked out after one night. The shower partition is just decorative as water got all over the floor. There were no lights at night for the stairs, halls or outside of the elevator. The parking is also two blocks away on the other side of the road for $25 a night. Very unfortunate as the location was fantastic.

We had a great stay. Lovely room in an old historic building. The staff was pleasant and the location is near so many great places to visit! There is construction going on next door so the view is a bit messy, but we were there on a weekend so there wasn’t noise. We appreciated the wine and cheese in the evening and the 12pm checkout!

Staff not very friendly or welcoming. Major demolition construction next to the hotel although we understand that was not their fault. The extreme noise from 7am to 4 pm was very difficult. People walking in the room above us was pretty loud as well. It’s an old building, I get that. Building is run down. Our room was fairly nice considering. Location is excellent. I think if staff was nicer, it would have helped the overall experience.

The room was very clean, the staff on the whole was very nice. The heating and cooling systems were a little outdated. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay.

The best part of the stay was the friendly and helpful staff. The room was clean and the bed and pillows were comfortable. My suggestion would be to get a better coffee and wine and have water available.

Very friendly and accomodating staff but the bathroom was not clean (hair in and around the shower and toilet). The heater going on and off was noisy. The location is great and easy to walk everywhere.
