We arrived late in the evening when it was pitch black out. Upon getting inside the house there was an overpowering smell... like a very strong febreze scent. We tried opening windows to air the house out, but only some would open while windows on half of the house were inoperable to us and sealed shut, which late at night we were not able to investigate. The next morning I went outside and saw a completely burned down house, less than 30ft away, next door and fire damage to the house we had just slept in; and the obvious reason that the windows were sealed shut. The odor of the smoldering fire was still strong in the air. The owners did not disclose this to us at any point. A quick Google search generated a story in the main Santa Fe newspaper about the fire, which happened just about a week prior. Unfortunately due to my wife's asthma we had to leave as quickly as we could; we scrambled to find different lodging. The owners did not disclose that the fire happened and that their otherwise cute home had suffered damage to at least one side and that for us as occupants our stay there would be impacted by the blight next door, the lack of use of windows on that side of the home, the odor of the fire, and unknown potential exposure to toxins and burn related particles in the air from the still smoldering material from the complete burned out home less than 30 feet away. The owner could have given us a heads up, they could have sent us photos of the situation, which would have allowed us to make an informed decision to either proceed to occupy the home under these conditions or to make other plans, but they're lack of disclosure kept us unaware. As a result, we did not have even the opportunity to make the personal safety and health decisions we would have made; we would have chosen not to stay there under those post fire conditions. The owner did give us a partial refund.
A quick Google news search generates the Santa Fe New Mexican article published December 5th which describes the heat of the fire in Madrid and documents the home is less than "30ft of it".
