Villa de Vientos, Your Escape from the City, Apt. 3
Apartment 3 is a charming little cottage with a private terrace, located at the back of Villa de Vientos’s inner garden—your Balamkú® option in Apaneca. With a master bedroom featuring a double bed and a very cozy and warm multifunctional space with a sofa bed integrated into the living room, this cottage guarantees privacy and the best rest for up to three people. This apartment, equipped with every detail, is ideal for exploring this picturesque town on the Ruta de las Flores on foot.
Not only is this accommodation charming, but it’s also perfect for combining a hike in the mountains with a serene, warm, and romantic retreat where you can rest, relax, and wake up feeling refreshed. In Nahuatl, Apaneca means “river of winds,” and here the climate is cool year-round, making it a pleasure to explore the town by walking through its streets and alleys lined with old wattle-and-daub houses with clay-tile roofs, interspersed with others featuring more modern architecture. You can walk safely both day and night.
Apaneca, 90 km from San Salvador (about 2 hours, depending on traffic), up the “ CA-8 ” highway that runs from Sonsonate to Ahuachapán, is one of the most visited destinations on the picturesque Ruta de Las Flores. Upon arriving at Villa de Vientos, guests are welcomed with the warm hospitality that sets Balamkú apart. When you receive your keys and step into the apartment that will be your home during your visit, you’ll know why we’re the best and most beautiful place in this wonderful coffee-growing town.
Just a few steps from Villa de Vientos, you’ll find two lovely shops offering handmade crafts, fine jewelry, high-quality souvenirs, bags and clothing made from raw cotton fabric, indigo-dyed garments, and works of art. At “Axul,” one of these shops, you can watch a lever loom in action and buy woven fabrics in a variety of designs and colors. There’s also a small, very cozy rustic-style café there where they serve specialty coffee, hot chocolate, exquisite desserts, and light yet flavorful dishes.
Villa de Vientos is in a fantastic location, just two blocks from the main square, which includes the central park and the Catholic church—two must-see spots. The plaza, with its majestic, century-old ceiba tree surrounded by flower-filled gardens, provides delightful shade for those who come to relax, breathe in the fresh air, buy plants, enjoy a sorbet or a cup of coffee, and visit the beautiful church. Originally built in 1798, the Parish Church of St. Andrew the Apostle is beautiful, with an impeccable white colonial-style façade and its iconic red dome, which is visible from almost anywhere and serves as a landmark. This church holds Mass every day except Mondays. On another side of the park is the Río de Vientos Tourist Plaza, featuring small stalls selling handicrafts, desserts, hot and cold beverages, and traditional snacks.
From Villa de Vientos, it’s easy to explore Apaneca in greater depth. For adventure seekers, there are guided buggy tours through mountains and farms, as well as to the scenic Laguna Verde, less than 5 km from the town center. You can book these tours with Apaneca Aventura Buggy Tours https://www.instagram.com/apaneca_aventura/. Another, more extreme option is the Canopy Tour, which takes you through forests and coffee plantations on zip lines that will have you “flying” over the treetops, reaching heights of up to 125 meters, from where you’ll enjoy the best views of the town and the mountains. Take the plunge and go on this tour with Apaneca Zipline Adventures, a company certified for this activity: https://www.instagram.com/apaneca_zipline/.
Otro. Another recommended outing, just a few blocks from Villa de Vientos, is Albania Laberinto Café, a park offering endless fun. You’ll find the entrance road right in front of town, at km 90 on the highway heading toward Ataco. There are many activities and games to enjoy, with the main attraction being the gigantic natural maze formed by more than 2,000 cypress trees. Measuring 45 x 45 meters, it is the largest in El Salvador and the second largest in Central America. Here, you’re guaranteed a full day of adrenaline and fun, but before your visit, check prices and hours at www.laberintoalbania.com.
You can also take advantage of your trip to Apaneca to visit excellent nearby country restaurants, such as Tayúa Bosque (3.7 km away), Jardín de Celeste (3.9 km away), and Entre Nubes (3.7 km away); the latter also offers coffee tours. In addition, enrich your travel experience by visiting the neighboring towns of Concepción de Ataco (7.9 km away), Salcoatitán (8.3 km away), and Juayúa (10.7 km away)—all brimming with magic, charm, and tradition.
And if you decide to retreat to the apartment, enjoy its tranquility, and take the opportunity to rest, unwind, and find harmony with love while waking up to the sound of birdsong and the lush nature of the central garden, Villa de Vientos de Balamkú® will always be your best host and, from your very first visit, the place you’ll always want to return to.
