Major volcanic activity area closed for the summer of 2019.

The Bumpass Hell Trail is closed. This was a big disappointment. The signage isn’t terrific. Some of the trailheads, even of well advertised trails like the trail to Cold Boiling Lake, can be hard to find. Still, the Park is really interesting and not crowded. The wildflowers were spectacular while we were there.

go when snow is gone (August?)

Don't go in winter unless you plan to snowshoe or c/c ski up the mountain.  There is NOTHING visible below the road closure point at the visitor's center except looking up at the peaks.  The gov't shut down ruined our plans to actually go to the visitor's center, but the only thing that gives them a 2 instead of a 1 is that someone was smart enough to design it with the restrooms accessible even if it's closed so we were able to go there and play in the snow and use them... thanks.
